Hi Gary,
On Familysearch.org there are 5 children listed for Mungo and Margaret:
Janet born 27 May 1794, Muthill
William baptized 28 Feb 1796, Crieff
Mungo baptized 29 Nov 1798, Crieff
Margaret baptized 19 Jul 1801, Crieff
James baptized 30 Oct 1803, Crieff

But I don't see a marriage. If Janet was their first child, then the marriage was likely around 1793, perhaps in Muthill, where Janet was born-- or they could have been from elsewhere. It's hard when you get back this far, since not all the records survive and there was no requirement to register the marriage or birth.

Regards,
Sarah

Mungo Sinclair
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 25 Jan 1768
Baptism/Christening Place: MONZIEVAIRD AND STROWAN,PERTH,SCOTLAND
Father's Name: Aeneas Sinclair
Mother's Name: Janet Brown

i found this on Familysearch.org, do you think this could be mungo. this mean he would have been 26 when having janet and 30 when having mungo.

Hi Gary,
That looks like a very likely birth, both age and location fit-- the problem will be to prove it! Monzievaird and Strowan are only 3 or 4 miles from Crieff on a present-day map. Been wandering around in Google Street View and it's a beautiful area :D

Any sign of a Margaret McLachlan in the neighbourhood?

Regards,
Sarah

i did have this match -

Margaret Mc Lachlan
christening: 18 Mar 1753 — MONZIEVAIRD AND STROWAN,PERTH,SCOTLAND
parents: John Mc Lachlan, Elisabeth Mc Niven

which is looking good but then there are many more :

birth: 02 Dec 1769 — LITTLE DUNKELD,PERTH,SCOTLAND
residence: 1769 — Pert, Scotland
parents: John Mclachlan, Isobel Murray

birth: 06 May 1764
christening: 20 May 1764 — MUTHILL,PERTH,SCOTLAND
residence: 1764 — Pert, Scotland
parents: Lauchlan Mclauchlan, Elizabeth Mcainsh

birth: 02 Apr 1764
christening: 03 Apr 1764 — BLAIR ATHOLL,PERTH,SCOTLAND
residence: 1764 — Pert, Scotland
parents: Alexr. Mclauchlan, Grissel Mcintosh

birth: 11 Mar 1764
christening: 17 Mar 1764 — LOGIERAIT,PERTH,SCOTLAND
residence: 1764 — Pert, Scotland
parents: James Mclachlen, Jean Bisset

birth: 13 Oct 1762
christening: 24 Oct 1762 — EPISCOPAL CHURCH,MUTHILL,PERTH,SCOTLAND
residence: 1762 — Pert, Scotland
parents: William Mc Laughlan, Mary Martine

the top one looks good but then she would be about 15 years older than him :/

… and 41 when Janet was born and 50 at the birth of wee James. Not totally impossible, but probably unlikely. Maybe that one was your Margaret's aunt.

But there are way too many choices, as you say :( Any one of the others could work as well. Going by the Scottish naming pattern (which it doesn't look like they did if it is the correct Mungo birth) then you would expect Mungo's parents to be William and Margaret; and Margaret's parents to be Mungo and Janet. Of course, at this distance it's hard to tell if we have all the children down or not. And without a marriage date we can't say if Janet was indeed the eldest.

I would be tempted to sit down some day with the microfilms and scroll through, noting all Sinclairs and Mclachlans in the area and the try to organize them into familes and see if anything jumps out…

Wouldn't it be nice if there were a will made by one of the parents, mentioning both Mungo and Margaret by name? Too much to hope for, probably :?

On ScotlandsPeople there is a will for a Donald Sinclair in 1781 in Muthill. That's the only one I see in the right time and place-- but so far Donald doesn't fit into the family at all, so probably not useful.

Not much help, sorry. Maybe someone will chime in with a brilliant idea.

Since it doesn't look as if either Mungo or Margaret survived until 1855 and statutory registration, you'll be dependent on the OPR death records, which don't look good for that area. Check out this list:

http://www.scotlandspeoplehub.gov.uk/pd ... 3to398.pdf

The only deaths in Crieff that are available are from 1762-93
Muthill has 1827-28 (you might get lucky if they just happened to die in that two-year period…)
Monzievard has better coverage: 1786-1811 and 1836-52

So, no harm having a look, but if you don't find the deaths it doesn't mean they didn't die there. Unfortunately, the death records that early, if they exist, often will just give the name and death date-- nothing more. But, occasionally one does get lucky and the parish priest wrote all kinds of extra stuff. I just found one like that in Norfolk the other day and it made great reading!

As for the surname, it could go either way. In Scotland, many women went by their maiden names but others by their married names, so you have to check both.

Let us know what you find out if you do go to Edinburgh next month!

i have one margaret sinclair in kilspindie, perth 1816 and another in madderty, perth 1840 and there are no mungo sinclairs at all from 1803-1854. so if it is the right margaret mclachlan in 1753 then she would have been 63 in kilspindie and 87 in madderty i cant access them becaus ei have ran out of credits but i will probs get some before i go to edinburgh next month
