James Reid of Aberdeen..his lost children

Post by msnuttyone » Mon Apr 11, 2011 2:01 am

I am looking for the lost children of James Reid b. 1815 in Heatherwick, died 1881 Aberdeen, I have found that he was widowed when he married Margaret Maxwell nee Gibb in abt 1851. His 1st wife was a Mary Jaffray born 1808 and died between 1850 and 1851 I assume in Aberdeen. James and Mary had 2 children. Ann Rae Reid b. 1848 and James Reid born 1850. Ann Rae is listed as living with her Grandparents Robert and Jane in the 1851 census. No sign of James who may have been with other family. I would dearly love to find out whatever happened to these two children. James Reid is the son of Robert Reid and Jane Hosach of Keithall Parish. I am also at a brick wall when it comes to tracing these parents back. Huge thanks if anyone can help or give me ideas where to search other than census and Scotlands People.

Regards
Adele

Hello and welcome to Talking Scot Adele.

A quick glance at the 1861 census shows James and Annie were both living with their father John St, St Nicholas. Ann is still with him in 1871.

James senior left a 10 page will - have you had a look at that to see if it mentions them?

There is a death indexed at SP of an Annie Rae Reid of the correct age - if you look at this and it's the correct one you'll find her marriage info.

I'm sure others will come up with more.

Regards,
Annette

Wow, thank you so much. I got a copy of the cert you referred to and yes I think it is Ann Rae although the mother is different. The step sister tells me it must be her as her half sister was a Jessie Smith. The brick walls of this family are slowly coming down. Annies father is my Gt Gt Grandfather.

Hi Adele,

I haven't seen the cert so I don't know what info was given - are you sure it's the right one as I can't see how a Jessie Smith would come in to the equation.

Annette

Hi Annette,

The cert says

Annie Rae Todd widow of James Todd (teacher). Father James Reid, builder, Mother Isabella Reid m/s Jaffray. Informant step-sister Jessie Smith (present) 94 Irvine Place, Aberdeen.

Jessie Smith nee Reid was Annies half sister and if I have the right census information she resided at 94 Irvine Place, Aberdeen. Father, James was a Master Builder with a business at 58 John Street, Aberdeen. The only incorrect info on the cert is her mothers name. On James marriage cert for his 2nd marriage his 1st wife notified as a Mary Jaffray.

Excellent - definitely her then. :D

Can't find them in 1881 but here they are in 1891 at Stirling -

James Todd 41 School Master (Head) born Marnoch, Banff
Annie Todd 41 born Aberdeen
James Todd 14 born Stirling
Mary Thompson 14

According to somebody at Ancestry James Reid junior died at sea but they do not give any other details.

Regards,
Annette

You guys are awesome !!! A little kiwi from the other side of the world takes her hat off to you all... thank you, thank you.

The ancestry person who has son "James died at sea" is me. I put that in from oral family comments, many of which have been proved incorrect, in the hope a death cert might surface for him. Finding Annie and her family has been so wonderful.

Can I ask please if Heatherwick is near Banffshire? I know the parish James b 1815 was born is Keithall. I spoke with an elderly cousin of my mums up in Canada yesterday to try and glean more info if there is any, and she indicated that James Reid snr, she had been told came from Banffshire Reids. She said she had been told this by a person she spoke to who did family crests. The comment he made to her was "they were sheep stealers from Banffshire and no clan would have wanted them".

I was not aware there were wills in SP so thank you for that also.

Warmest Regards to all the helpers..

Keithhall and Kinkell is in the centre of Aberdeenshire, just outside the town of Inverurie. Where does the Heatherwick come from? Was it on his birth record in which case it is probably the name of the farm/house in Keithhall where the family lived. Banffshire is quite a few miles further North.

Anne

P.S. In 1797 to 98 there are 2 people paying horse tax in Heatherwick, Keithhall, George Bruce and William Watt. I'm not sure if the place is still around. If so will take a piccie of it and mail it to you. Will pm if I find it.
