Wylie and Lochead Undertakers records.....

Post by ladybird » Thu Sep 01, 2005 9:51 am

Hi all
I'm sneaking in here quietly  It's been such a long time since I last posted that I'm a bit wary of asking for a BIG favour from anyone who might have access to the Glasgow University Archives Service.
I recently emailed the Duty Archivist with 3 queries about the funerals for my Jeffrey family members. GUAS hold the records for Wylie and Lochead and 2 of the death certs give them as undertakers.
See below for Q&A.....
Hi
I'm wondering if you can help me with burial records please.
I have:
Isabella JEFFREY death registered 29th July 1856, certified burial at the
Southern Necropolis.

and her son...
John JEFFREY died 25th March 1856, certified burial at the Southern
Necropolis.

I am also wondering if Wylie and Lockhead may have also buried Isabella's husband, John JEFFREY? I can find no record of his death but have a Burial Plot account dated 20/08/1848 -
Suscriber's Pass-Book for Lairs in the Additional Ground to the Southern Necropolis.

Thank you for your enquiry of 24th August. I have found further details of
John Jaffrey's funeral in volume HF 57/6/2/1/17. Please note that his name
was spelt as Jaffrey not Jeffrey in the order book. A coffin, shroud, and
gown were ordered along with 2 black horses for the hearse and four coaches.
The funeral took place at the Southern Necropolis on Friday 28th March 1856.

I have looked for an entry for Isabella Jeffrey a few days either side of
29th July 1856 without success. Could it be that she was buried by a
different company or that the dates were slightly different? I have also
looked for an entry for Isabella's husband, John Jeffrey between the 20th
August and 9th September 1848 but have found no trace of him. Unfortunately
there aren't any indexes for the volumes until 1879 so it's quite time
consuming to trace people without specific dates. You're more than welcome
to come in to do a more in-depth search if you would like. If you could
please email the duty archivist beforehand then we can ensure we have space
for you in the reading room. If you are unable to visit in person, details
about our research service can be found on our website at

Ok so that's a very nice bit of info for son John, but Isabella should be there too. Her date of death was actually 12th July 1856, so maybe the archivist didn't go far enough back.

The most important one to me though is John Jeffrey (Snr) and I would dearly love to find something on him. I haven't been able to find his death on SP, and was really hoping that they used the same undertakers for all 3 burials as he's proving very elusive.

What do you think, folks? Or any other suggestions?

Hello Sylvia,

You could try Glasgow City Council

I was able to obtain information on who was buried in a particular lair because I the lair number.

I know records of the Southern Necropolis are pretty sparse but it may be worth a try.

Good Luck,

Thanks Annette, it's a case of been there, done that. No luck there either.
I thought it would be so easy with having the Lair number too.

I can feel this man laughing at me " Ach awa wi ya lass, all ye have to do is dig"
