This is the long shot to end all longshots but here goes anyway. I am trying to find out the surname of one of my g.uncle's friends. In a letter from April 1919 written by my g.g. grandparents (Alexander & Annie Stewart) in Ardrishaig to two of their children (Ishobel & James) there is a mention of a lad named Barlow and the fact that he would be coming to stay at their home once that particular school term ended. Ishobel and James were, as far as I know, attending Dunoon Grammar School and stayed in digs while at school. James was born c. 1902 so would have been about 15 years old when the letter was written. I am presuming that Barlow was a resident of Dunoon or the surrounding area and would have been about the same age as James. The fact that Barlow is not a particularly common surname might mean that this query may ring a bell with someone. Here's hoping.

In the births on ScotlandsPeople, there is a Barlow Scott, born 1901 in Inverary. That's the nearest that I can see.
All the best,

Annette and Andrew, thank you for getting in touch. I think this is the Barlow I have been looking for. Obviously named after his grandfather. I will take my research further from here and see what I can find.

The Argyllshire archives in Lochgilphead hold the records of DGS. Not sure if that would give you any further info or if they go far enough back for you but it's worth a look at their catalogue. see that they don't seem to have an online catalogue but from the Archon site it seems that they have school records dating from 1904 so you might find something of interest. It could at least confirm that Barlow Scott was at school with your relatives.

Re: Young schoolboy Barlow's surname
Hi Anne, thank you for the information. In the past I have been in touch with the records office in Lochgilphead about BMD certificates. I had no idea that they kept other sorts of records. I will email them to see if they would be willing to check their records for DGS. If they can't and I have to travel down that's okay too. I have relatives in the area I can stay with. Will let you know how I get on.

Re: Young schoolboy Barlow's surname
Hi Anne, I contacted the Argyll and Bute Records Office. They don't have the DGS school rolls for the relevant dates. They do however have some DGS records but I would have to pay them to do the checking for me. Will probably wait until I visit the area on my next trip and view the records in person. It's not all bad news though. I did manage to track down Barlow Scott in the 1911 census. He was living with his parents in Dunoon (Hillview Street?). His father was a grocer. I am now starting to think that perhaps the connection between Barlow and my great uncle may not have actually been school after all. Barlow Scott was born on the 10th February 1901. By April 1919 he would have been to old to have still been at school - that is if Barlow Scott is the Barlow I am after. I had previously contacted DGS directly to see if they had any archives they could check but I never heard back form them. Will keep plugging away.
