the Sutherlands

Post by garydevine1995 » Thu Jul 21, 2011 10:29 pm

i have been recently finding stuff out about my grandfathers side, william russel sutherland. i was wondering if you could help me find his great grand parents marriage. ok, williams father was also william russel sutherland and his mother was elizabeth rooney married in 1925 glasgow. williams parents were john sutherland and margaret neilson married in 1899 glasgow and then it comes to the G grandparents john sutherland and i think it is susan lauson. by this time i think we would be in caithness or in edinburgh, as when i looked up the first john sutherland in 1911 census it says he was born in edinburgh and his father was born in caithness thurso or something like that so i dont no if they got married in caithness and moved to edinburgh.

I think I've managed to follow the family and this looks like them at 1 Gibb's Close, Newington, Edinburgh in 1881. They are in Glasgow in 1891 where John is an Insurance agent. Does that fit?

John Sutherland 42 born Thurso Commission Agent
Susan Sutherland 38 born St Cuthberts
Robert Mc Lelland Cavaye 20 born St Cuthberts Stepson
William Charles Sutherland 5 born St Cuthberts
John Sutherland 9 MO born St Cuthberts

So it looks likely they married at Edinburgh. Her name couldn't be Russell by any chance as there is this marriage.

JOHN SUTHERLAND

Marriages:
Spouse: SUSAN RUSSELL Family
Marriage:
15 OCT 1875 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Later................Yup this lady is definitely Susan Russell - here is Robert's birth -

ROBERT MC LAREN CAVAY

Event(s):
Birth:
20 AUG 1860 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Parents:
Father: WILLIAM CAVAYE Family
Mother: SUSAN RUSSELL

If this is the correct family then John had also been married before - he is at the same address in 1871 with Margaret.

Annette

Wow, this is brilliant Annette. it is definatly them in 1881 =D as john would have been born round about 1880 as did his wife margaret neilson. so see john and susan were they both married before then but only susan cam out of her first marraige with a child? I will need to find out who this margaret is then and susans husband............ oh also susans name is russell because that would tie in with my grandpas middle name and his father middle name. see in 1891 is there anymore sutherland children in the family apart from william and john?

I got the death cert for john sutherland who was married to Susan and it says widower of SusanRussell but their is no other name but on his marriage cert it says he is a widower and it gives no name of who he was married to before. Susan died in 1908 and I tryed lookin for her first husbands death cert but I couldn't get anything also on the marriage cert it says Susan is a spinster.

Hi Gary,

At this stage I wouldn't worry too much about previous partners as really they have nothing to do with your ancestor John jnr. When John senior died maybe whoever registered it never knew he had been married before and it looks like Susan was never married to William Cavaye.

I'd be more interested in confirming that this is the right family (since you can't make out Susan's maiden name) by confirming John senior's occupation as an insurance agent on John junior's marriage entry.

John and Susan had one more child, Maggie, in 1891.

Regards,
Annette

Oh I am sure that it is the right family as on johns marriage cert his parents are the same on his death cert and it was his son john who signed it also in 1911 john is living with his son john and his wife Margaret and it says he was 71 and on his death cert he was 71 in 1911 so he died after the census was taken. I am a bit worried but with johns parents, john would of been born in between 1830 and 1840 as most ofvthe dates I have found lead between that decade, on his marriage his mum is Christina Henderson and his dad is William and then on his death cert his mum is Catherine Henderson and his dad is William and I can't find a marriage for them or a birth cert for john in caithness
