I’m searching for the Grieve family and have come across several options in taking this further so I’m looking for any help to put me on the right path.
I’m looking for the predecessors of Thomas Grieve born about 1796.
According to the 1841 Census for High Church Paisley, Renfrewshire:
Name: Thomas Grieve
Age: 45
Occupation: Silk Hand Loom Weaver
Born in the county
Wife: Agnes Grieve (nee Wright)
Age: 35 (From other research, I have her born 03/03/1806 in Renfrewshire)
No occupation
Born in the county
Male: John Grieve
Age: 15
No occupation
Born in the county
Male: Thomas Grieve
Age: 3
No occupation
Born in the county
From my other research, Agnes parents were Daniel Wright b 21/03/1780 in Glasgow and Mary Chalmers b about 1778 in Glasgow. Daniel and Mary were married 26/10/1801 in Glasgow. I don't have a marriage date for Thomas and Agnes from any searches on Scotland's People.
From a search on Scotland’s People between 1795 and 1797 on baptisms for Thomas Grieve I get the following:
Number 1
Date: 30/06/1794
Name: THOMAS GRIEVE
Parent names: THOMAS GRIEVE/ MARGARET SCOTT
Parish: HAWICK
City/ County: /ROXBURGH
Number 2
Date: 31/05/1795
Name: THOMAS GRIEVE
Parent names: DAVID GRIEVE/ JANET NICHOLSON
Parish: CERES
City/ County: /FIFE
Number 3
Date: 30/12/1796
Name: THOMAS GRIEVE
Parent names: THOMAS GRIEVE/
Parish: WESTRUTHER
City/ County: /BERWICK
Number 4
Date: 31/12/1797
Name: THOMAS GRIEVE
Parent names: JAMES GRIEVE/ MARGARET DOUGHTY
Parish: LEITH SOUTH
City/ County: EDINBURGH CITY/ MIDLOTHIAN
As you will see, none are in the Glasgow area and I don’t have any leads for the Grieve family moving from one of the other areas. Number 4 seems possible (purely based on Geography and transport links) but without any other leads from my research, I’m a bit stuck as to whom are the right predecessors to follow. I've searched on Ancestry and Genes Reunited but to no avail.
It could be I've missed something simple so any help to get over this hurdle is gratefully received.
Regards
Stuart

Re: Help needed with searching for Grieve family
Hi Stuart, and a warm welcome to TalkingScot ![[scotland-flag] [scotland-flag]](./images/smilies/scotland-happy.gif)
I can't see from the list that any one, would be more likely to be the correct parents, than any other. Do the first names shown recur in the family. Certainly Thomas will, but what about the occurence of the wives' names?
The IGI has a number of births/christenings for Thomas Grieve 1796 +/- 5, but only 1 in Lanark
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... _form=true
There is also one in Renfrew, in case he was born at his maternal grandparents, which is sometimes the case, but with a 5 year age difference.
Christening: 25 NOV 1790 Low Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents:
Father: THOMAS GRIEVE
Mother: MARGARET RIED
Sorry that's not much help, but someone else may have a better take on it.
Again, Welcome!
Frances

Re: Help needed with searching for Grieve family
Hello Stuart,
Could this be Thomas in 1851 with son Thomas? Remember that on the 1841 census the ages were rounded DOWN, so that age 45 could have been 45-49.
1851
53 Canal Street, Paisley High Church, Renfrewshire
Alexander Boyd, 32, Head, born England, Joiner
Grace Boyd, 32, Wife, born Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Joiners Wife
Margret Boyd, 9, Daughter, born Paisley, Refrewshire, Scholar
Alexander Boyd, 7, Son, born Paisley, Refrewshire, Scholar
Elisabeth Boyd, 5, Daughter, born Paisley, Refrewshire
Thomas Boyd, 2, born Paisley, Refrewshire
Thomas Greive, 60, Lodger, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, H L Weaver
Thomas Greive, 13, Lodger, born Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scholar
If Thomas lived until 1855, then downloading his death certificate should give you the name of his parents (if the informant knew that information). The last one that Frances found looks like it could be the correct birth, but you would want to verify that with the death certificate, if possible.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Help needed with searching for Grieve family
I think I would also follow up on Grace Grieve/Boyd by looking at her death entry. That will hopefully give you her parents names. If her father was not Thomas then it should give you another angle to look from. Shame it does not give a relationship in 1851.

Annette

Frances, Sarah, Annette,
Many thanks for the prompt responses. Much appreciated.
I'll have a look at your suggestions and see if that gives me the lead I've been after.
Once again thanks
