I have managed to trace a few dozen Ingles/Inglis ancestors, almost all from the Prestonpans area, and with births going back to the 1680s.
The name is said to derive from the fact that they were descendents of English soldiers, who stayed on in the area.
My question is.....from what period in our history do these English soldiers belong? I guess it must be sometime between Edward I and Oliver Cromwell.
I am tending toward the earlier end of that scale as, by the 17th century, they would presumably all have had established surnames, and may not have taken to altering them to English/Inglis/Ingles.
Thanks.

Re: Inglis/Ingles surname in Mid and East Lothian
Hello Hibee,
If you search the SP wills prior to 1700 for place name Prestonpans you’ll get 134 results and they all have surnames right back to the 1500s. I’m not sure where the earlier surnames there came from but quite a few look like places.
This book, published 1805, places the surname Inglis in Scotland at least as far back as Edward I of England. http://books.google.com.au/books?id=zKN ... me&f=false
Hope that helps,
Alan

Re: Inglis/Ingles surname in Mid and East Lothian
I am also researching an Inglis line that eventually migrated to America in the 1880s and 1900. My great grandmother, Margaret Reid Inglis and her brother, Robert Aitkinson Inglis were the ones to migrate. I have been looking for information about them for several decades and yesterday, I had a break through I think! If the information I found is correct, their parents were William Inglis and Jane leith Miln who were married 7 August 1863 in Skene, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. All of their children were christened in St Nicholas Kirk, Aberdeen, Scotland. I have found Jane's parents but, I'm having trouble finding information about William Inglis. I think he may have been born about 1841 and have found several William Inlis's born in that year alone! Can someone help me, please?
Sincerely,
Edwina Moody

Hello Edwina and welcome to
Have you been able to trace William through the censuses? If you can find out a likely death date and place, it will be easier to find his death certificate. On that certificate should be the names of his parents... if he died in Scotland. Since it was the children who emigrated, I'm hoping that William and Jane stayed and that their death certificates can be found on scotlandspeople.gov.uk
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Inglis/Ingles surname in Mid and East Lothian
Back again for another quick post. This looks like the family in 1881, having moved south:
4 Maxwell St, St George, Midlothian
William Inglis, 42, Head, born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Stationers Assistant
Jane Inglis, 43, Wife, born Aberdeenshire
John Inglis, 16, Son, born Aberdeenshire, Chemists
Jessie Inglis, 15, Daughter, born Aberdeenshire
Maggie Inglis, 12, Daughter, born Aberdeenshire
Alex Inglis, 7, Son, born Midlothian, Edinburgh
Charles Inglis, 5, Son, born Midlothian, Edinburgh
Robert Inglis, 2, Son, born MIdlothian, Edinburgh
John Mathison, 44, Boarder, born Dingwall, Ross Shire, Gardener
They are in Edinburgh St Cuthberts in 1891 and in Edinburgh Morningside in 1901, so at least both William and Jane lived that long. In 1901 there is an elderly aunt living with them-- Elspeth Inglis age 87, born Aberdeen, who could provide a clue.
Regards,
Sarah

Re: Inglis/Ingles surname in Mid and East Lothian
Hello Edwina,
I had a look on scotlandspeople.gov.uk, (the only site where BMD certificates from Scotland can be downloaded) and found the following possible death records:
Jane Inglis, other surname Milne died in 1910 in Morningside, Edinburgh City.
William Inglis also died in Morningside in 1903. Or at least a William of about the right age did (just playing with the search function). So Jane would have been still alive when he died to supply the correct information about his parents on the certificate, which is good news. Sometimes when people outlive most of their family, the informant on the death certificate doesn't know the relevant information, but in this case that should not be a problem.
All the best,
Sarah
