SAMSOM FAMILY LINE

Post by blixems99 » Sun Aug 14, 2011 8:19 am

I am looking for any information you might have in the Samson families of Scotland. The John Samson I am looking for was born 12 January 1827. He was wed to a MARY CONNELY or CONELLY (not sure of spelling) They later moved to South Africa. He died in South Africa, yet his wife and their children, John, Gordon and Morag returned to Scotland.

I need to find out to which of the Scottish clans the Samson's are related to.

Please help!

Hi there

Welcome to Talking Scot.

Can I ask where you got the date of birth for John in 1827. Can't at the moment see his birth on the old parish records in Scotland's People but that does not mean anything really. Do you know when he went to South Africa and when his wife and children returned. Gordon and Morag are fairly modern first names. Do you know what part of Scotland they came from or what religion they were.

It looks to me as though most of the Sansoms came either from the South West of Scotland or from Angus, neither of which are Highland areas so they may well have no connection with any clan at all. Clans as such really only existed in the Highlands and were often more loose connections than is sometimes believed. There are many proud Scottish families, e.g. the border families, which are not properly called clans and for many Scots clans were not relevant at all. Having said that any kilt shop in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh will find you a clan connection regardless and sell you a kilt in 'your' tartan!

Hi,

If you are looking to see which tartan the Samson's would wear........the Kith and Kin book recommends the Lanarkshire tartan, as that seems to be the area where the name is most popular.

You can view the tartan at http://www.tartansauthority.com

Samson [Sampson, Samsoune, Sanson, Sansoune, Sumson, etc etc etc] family very difficult to check, the family appear to split into two in 1695 when Agnes Sampson the good wife of Humbie was burnt as a witch in Edinburgh. I am descended fron the Sanson branch. they were mainly based in and around Edinburgh but spread down the East coast of Scotland to Berwick on Tweed, those who remained as Samson moved West to Glasgow with a smattering going North to Perth. They were very much a lowland family and would not have had a tartan, the most common derivation of the name was that it was given to blacksmiths, they were very strong men - Sampson from the biblical stories- hope this helps, I will look at my earlier research and see if I have any more info for you

Hi there,
Did you mean 1927 as the year of birth? Also are you still looking for May Samson and her family?
