Mary Roy Sinclair mystery

Post by garydevine1995 » Fri Sep 23, 2011 9:23 pm

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if someone could help me find the marriage (if she was married) or death cert of my great great great aunt Mary Roy Sinclair.

She was born in Crieff, Perthshire in 1882 -/+ 1.

Her parents were Peter Sinclair born c 1850 - 1903. he died in Edinburgh and Helen Roy born in 1851 - 1934 she died in Glasgow.

On the 1901 census she is single and living with her parents and some siblings. in the 1911 census she is still single and living with her mother and some siblings and their children too.

I have a picture of the family and it was dated to 1912-1914 but i think it might of been taken for her mothers 60th birthday in 1911 but that's just a theory.

I don't know if she went abroad but looking on Scotland's people it looks like she might have as i cant find a death cert for a Mary Roy or Mary with the details given above.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Gary :)

Hi Gary,

If she married or died in Scotland post-1911, she must be badly mis-indexed on ScotlandsPeople. My feeling is that she may well have left Scotland. I checked both Sinclair and St Clair with various combinations of wildcards to catch most probable mis-spellings.

All the best,

Hi Andrew,

I thought she might of left after 1911. I was rather hoping she had signed her mothers death cert but it was her brother. I have searched for all mary roy sinclair and mary sinclair but no detah or marriage certs that fit her, how would we find out if she went abroad?

Ancestry has her listed on two trees
Heaton Family
Cowan Family

I don't have a subscription for Ancestry.

Neither of the trees on Ancestry show a marriage or death for her. Both have birth and 1891 census only.

Back to the drawing board.

Hi Gary,

No luck with finding your girl on FMP.

There are no Mary Roy or Mary R St Clair's born 1882 +- 10 yrs on FMP.

There is a 27 yr old Marianne with a husband and child going to the USA 1919
A 29 yr old Mrs Mary St Clair with three children going to Montreal, Canada 1915
A 23 yr old Mary St Clair, Stenographer going to Montreal, Canada 1912
A 47 yr old Mary St Clair, housewife going to Montreal, Canada 1933...last known address was 10 Glenfield St., Dennistoun, Glasgow.

Keep searching, she might turn up where you least expect her.

Regards,
Anne H

Hi Everyone,

Andrew - Could you tell me the 1891 census for both familys please if you can.

Sarah - The first one could be her but as you say we cant be sure.

I dont think she would be done as st clair, the scottish pronounce it Sinklur, well my family do anyway lol

Gary.

Hi Gary,

The tree info on Ancestry for both families quotes the same census record - the family of Peter Sinclair and Helen Roy Sinclair, with nine children at home that night in Glasgow. You already have the 1891 Ancestry transcriptions from one of the previous times you asked about this family. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15881 You can download an image of the original census page from ScotlandsPeople rather than use an Ancestry transcription.

All the best,

AndrewP
