Miln Family of Aberdeen

Post by Familytreeclimber » Tue Nov 01, 2011 4:53 pm

I am looking for information about the Miln family, I have found information for John Miln, his wife Janet Duff, and their family. I know I have found a Miln Hall in Skene, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and was wondering if they could be related to the family the hall is named for. I also know the children were Christened in St Nicholas Kirk, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. If someone can help me with this family, I would appreciate all the help I can get since this is my first time researching outside the United States.
Sincerely,
Edwina Moody

Hi Edwina,
perhaps you could give us the time-scale that you are looking at?

Looking for the family in the census records can help find out lots about them if they were in Scotland after 1841.

Searching on freecen is a good place to start, then you can see the original entries [plus births, etc] on Scotlands People on a pay per view basis.

Miln in Scots is often a mill, so the Hall may have nothing to do with a family name, which often has an e at the end - remember to try both versions when searching.

This might be them in 1861:

1861 Scotland Census 1861 Scotland Census
Name: John Milne
Age: 63
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1798
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name : Jannet Milne
Gender: Male
Where born: Cruden, Aberdeenshire
Registration Number: 238
Registration district: Skene
Civil parish: Skene
County: Aberdeenshire
Address: Broadstruck Inn
Occupation: Farmer 30 Acres Inn Keeper
ED: 4
Household schedule number: 36
Line: 10
Roll: CSSCT1861_33
Household Members: Name Age
John Milne 63
Jannet Milne 66
Tom S Milne 26
Margret Duff 14
Helen Milne 23
James Staff 4
George Milne 1 MO
James Duncan 25
James Christie 25

The Tom S is actually a girl according to the census. If you can give us more information such as the childrens names that you know of and their father's occupation, it will help us help you! Also, Miln and Milne are both used and it is a large family. I have one whole bunch of them in my family, but mine originate in Peterhead.

Here they are in 1851 (same address in 1841) confirmed by children at the IGI

Piece: SCT1851/168 Place: Aberdeen -Aberdeenshire Enumeration District: 5E
Civil Parish: St Clements Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 133 Page: 41 Schedule: 230
Address: 3 Fish Street

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
MILNE John Head M M 56 General Carter Aberdeenshire - Cruden
MILNE Janet Wife M F 57 Aberdeenshire - Monquhitter
MILNE George Son U M 21 Journeyman Hse Carpenter Aberdeenshire - Aberdeen
MILNE Jane Dau U F 16 Aberdeenshire - Aberdeen
MILNE Eliza Dau U F 13 Aberdeenshire - Aberdeen
DUFF Margaret Neice U F 3 Aberdeenshire - Turriff

I don't know where Milne Hall is located but since you know John was born at Cruden that could be an indication as to whether he had any connections or not.

Milne is a very common name in Aberdeenshire. I think anybody who has Aberdeenshire ancestors will have a Milne somewhere - I know I have. :)

This looks like Milne Hall at Kirkton of Skene, near the red doors at the corner of the car park. It’s just a village community hall, and seems to have been around since at least 1885 and used for concerts, dances, meetings and you name it. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=57 ... 7,,2,-1.43

The John Milne in Carol’s post was the tenant of the Broadstraik Inn from at least 1855. This appears to be it. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ll=57 ... 56,,0,5.62

The two places are just over a mile away from each other, as the crow flies.

Thank you everyone for your kind help. My great great great grandparents, John Milne and Janet Duff are indeed the ones that are listed in both the 1851 and 1861 census that people have been kind enough to find for me. Here is the entire family as I know them with help from other people:
John Milne christened 10 Apr 1788 in Skene, Aberdeenshire, Scotland but born in Cruden parish.
Janet or Jannet Duff, his wife was born in Monquhitter parish.
John Milne, son was christened on 25 Sep 1820 in St Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Christina Milne, daughter was christened on 9 Jul 1827 in Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland
George Wood Milne, son was christened on 21 Apr 1829 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Margaret Burnett Milne, daughter was christened on 27 Mar 1831 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Jane Leith Milne, daughter (my great great grandmother) was christened on 28 Nov 1834 in Saint Nicholas, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Elizabeth Milne Milne, daughter was christened on 12 Aug 1836 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

From what I have been able to research, I believe John Milne's parents were John Milne christened 20 Jul 1760 in Skene but possibly born in Bourtie, Aberdeen, Scotland and Jean Nory.
I really appreciate all the help everyone has been giving me. This is my first ancestor I have actually researched outside the United States. At this point, I have purchased my great grandmother's birth certificate which was quite helpful in my research for her parents and grandparents.

Thank you so much for all your help and for your time.
