James Shedden - Where Did He Go ?

Post by darylrodger » Wed Jan 04, 2012 11:47 pm

Hi,

I'm currently researching an ancestor of mine named James Shedden, (shawl weaver) b. 1822 in Paisley but I can't seem to find his parents or his death. I already know he was married to Jane/Janet Britton on 16 Apr 1846, in High Church, Paisley.

His wife Janet died on 22 Feb 1886 in 5 St. James St. Paisley, and was still living at that time. I've looked in the 1891 & 1900 census's but without any luck.

Any ideas :? ?

Hi Daryl

Surname variation would be the first thing that springs to mind. Shedden looks like the sort of name which could be abused a bit! Have you searched for s*d*n or even Cheden (variations) in SP? I did a quick lookup in deaths for James s*d*n 1886 to 1922 (in case he lived to 100 years old) in Renfrew & there was just 1 match; could be him - sorry I didn't have any credits to take a look.

Have you found him in the 1841 census?

freecen has a match:
Piece: SCT1841/573 Place: Paisley -Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 4
Civil Parish: Paisley High Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 4 Page: 14
Address: 9 Storrie St
Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SHEDDEN Wm M 50 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver Renfrewshire
SHEDDEN Janet F 50 Renfrewshire
SHEDDEN James M 15 Cotton Hand Loom Weaver Renfrewshire
SHEDDEN Wm M 10 Cloth Lapper Appren Renfrewshire
remember they rounded ages down in 1841.
And after his marriage in 1851;
Piece: SCT1851/559 Place: Abbey (Paisley) -Renfrewshire Enumeration District: 12
Civil Parish: Abbey (Paisley) Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: -
Folio: 471 Page: 10 Schedule: 35
Address: 19 Incle St
Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
SHEDDEN James Head M M 30 Handloom Weaver Renfrewshire - Paisley
SHEDDEN Janet Wife M F 29 Renfrewshire - Renfrew
SHEDDEN William Son - M 4 Renfrewshire - Paisley
If these are right then you now have his parents: an IGI extraction gives :
WILLIAM SHEDDEN
JANET BARBOUR Marriage: 18 SEP 1819 Lochwinnoch, Renfrew, Scotland

Looking for his death using wildcards as Robert sugests should be able to confirm.
Playing with the search on SP would suggest that death happened in 1890 so he would have missed the next census.

5. WILLIAM SHEDDEN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 18 SEP 1853 High Church, Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland
Rearranging these in date order gives,

WILLIAM SHEDDEN - b. 18 SEP 1853 High Church, Paisley
JANET SHEDDEN - b. 10 OCT 1855 High Church, Paisley
ELIZABETH SHEDDEN - b. 10 NOV 1857 High Church, Paisley
JEAN SHEDDEN b. 24 JAN 1860 High Church, Paisley
ROBERT SHEDDEN - b. 11 AUG 1866 High Church, Paisley

Note that this list includes an 1855 birth, - such 1855 registrations include a lot more info than later statutory registrations, including the ages and places of birth of the parents, as well as the number of previous children, alive and deceased, - in this case 1 boy living, and 1 boy and 2 girls deceased since their 1846 marriage in Paisley, which fits with Janet being shown as Janet SHEDDEN MS BRITTEN's 5th child. James is shown as 34 years old, b. Paisley.

Maybe more to follow ........

No!, according to his death registration his parents were, -

William SHEDDEN and Janet DONALD.

In a weaving context, Lochwinnoch was always a possibility given the later Paisley records, however James was born in Paisley.

His death registration is made not so easy to find due to an archetypical piece of mis-indexing as regards his surname.

HINT: On ScotlandsPeople, use the fuzzy search option for SHEDDEN, restricting the search to Paisley and year of birth 1922 +/- 3 !!

Note that he died in the poorhouse, but I'm unclear on the survival of useful records regarding the Paisley Poorhouse. At best they could provide all sorts of useful info regarding his children, as the Poorhouse inspector was always very keen to find out the extent to which they could support their parent.

BTW, the family are easy to find in the 1881 census.

Hi,
Many thanks for finding the info regarding James ! I had another go on SP using surname options but didn't find him, although I did in the 1881 census. I'll visit Paisley library, to find out more about him in the Poorhouse. It's sad to think he ended his days there, rather than live with one of his children.

Daryl

Hi,

Just thought I'd update on James Shedden.

I've found his parents marriage on family search, which was on 5 Oct 1815 in High church, Paisley. All I have to do now is visit Paisley, to look at poorhouse records.

Many thanks MB for your help, its much appreciated :D .

Regards,

Daryl
