I am looking for information on
Jane Cochrane born 9 Oct 1823 Dalmellington Ayrshire and family
Jane Cochrane had a daughter Agnes Irvine born about 1848 Kilmarnock Ayrshire
Jane and Agnes show up on a census 1851 as visitors in her brother in-laws house.
Jane Cochrane 23
Agnes Irvine 1
I have found that Jane (also known as Jean) Cochrane later married David Kennedy and had the following children
Catherine Kennedy 1855-1928
Marion Kennedy 1858-1859
David Kennedy 1860-1921
Marion Cochrane Kennedy 1862-1863
this is where is gets interesting
Scotland's people shows that when Catherine Kennedy was born, Jane Cochrane had two other children
one being Agnes Irvine and the other unknown.
I would like to know who Agnes Irvines father was (as thats my family line) and information about the other unknown child.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Lesa Day

Re: Jane Cochrane - Dalmellington Ayrshire
Hello Lesa and a warm ![TS welcome [TS_welcome]](./images/smilies/TS_welcome.png)
I had a look at the 1851 and 1861 censuses for Agnes and both said she was born in Dalmellington about 1850 (she was 1 and then 11). Is there some other reason you feel she was born a few years earlier in Kilmarnock?
In any case, your best bet would be to somehow get a look at the Kirk Session records around the time of her birth. If she was illegitimate, chances are they would have been talking about it and with luck would be pointing the finger at her father as well as her mother.
A quick look at the catalogue of the National Archives of Scotland shows that they do not hold the records for Dalmellington:
Country code: GB
Repository code: 1663
Repository: Burns Monument Centre, Kilmarnock
Reference: CH2/85
Title: Records of Dalmellington Kirk Session
Dates: 1641-1929
Access status: Not held
Access conditions: This record group is not in the NAS. It is held in the Burns Monument Centre, Kilmarnock
Perhaps if you contact the Burns Monument Centre in Kilmarnock, they could advise you on how you might arrange to have a look at the records: http://www.burnsmonumentcentre.co.uk/17/contact/
I hope someone more knowledgeable will come along soon and can advise you in more detail. In the meantime, welcome!
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Jane Cochrane - Dalmellington Ayrshire
Welcome to TS
I suppose the obvious question would be , what did Agnes herself say about her father?
I mean, who is on her own marriage cert and what parent's names appears on her death cert?
Do you have any note of Agnes birth? the OPR records sometimes gives more details than you'd expect.
There is a birth on the IGI:
AGNES COCHRAN
Birth: 04 SEP 1850 Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Father: HUGH COCHRAN
Mother: JEAN STRUTHERS
Extracted birth or christening record for the local
which looks interesting - was Cochrane her mother's maiden name or could she have been married before?
Do you have Jane Cochrane/kennedy's death cert? that may give more details of her history.
The other child shown in 1855 could well have died young but still would be mentioned that year again there is a child born to the parents above on the IGI :
NATHANIEL STEVENSON COCHRAN Male Birth: 08 JUL 1848 Barony, Lanark .
this could be heading you down the wrong direction - if Jean was a Cochrane from birth.
reading what Sarah has just posted - I am heading you off on the wrong direction.....

Re: Jane Cochrane - Dalmellington Ayrshire
I agree with WilmaM about looking at the marriage and death certificates.
Looks like Agnes died in 1887 in Kilmaurs, Ayr. The accuracy of her parents' names on this document would depend on the knowledge of the informant.
However, she herself should have given the information when she married Alexander Ross in 1873 in Kilmarnock. Assuming that you already have this certificate, I'll wait to hear from you before looking any further.
Regards,
Sarah

Re: Jane Cochrane - Dalmellington Ayrshire
This 1851 census is going to take a wee bit of working out. A look at the original (or finding William and Catherine in 1841) might help. I thought at first they were Jane's parents (what were her parents names?) but maybe they were her Aunt and Uncle.
I wonder if Janet was the other child of Jane . It should say on Catherine's birth entry of 1855 what sex Jane's 2 previous children were and if they were living.
1851 Dalmellington -
William Cochran 72 Head Carter employing 1 horse (wonder how much he paid him)
born Kirkcudbright
Catherine Cochran 66 born Laggan, Inverness
Ann Cochran 37
Margaret Cochran 23 daughter (thought this was the Margaret who married William Currie but she was born in 1833)
William Mickle 15
Annie Cochran 10
Jean Pattison 6 pauper (deserted child)
William Currie 10 MO nephew
Janet Cochrane 1 niece
Sarah's right though the Kirk Sessions are definitely the way to go.
I'll go and look at the family in 1841.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Jane Cochrane - Dalmellington Ayrshire
Thank you for all the nice welcomes, and for the great ideas, sorry It took me so long to get on, the website seems to lock me out in the day time for some reason. This is all very interesting information I will need to sit down over the weekend and try to nut it all out.
Jane (sometimes known as Jean) Cochrane's (born 9 Oct 1823 Dalmellington Ayrshire) mother and father are
William Cochrane born 1779 New Galloway
and
Catherine McDonald born 1785 Invernip Laggan Inverness-shire
so I am sure her maiden name was Cochrane.
Agnes Irvine married Alexander Ross
thank you all again

The website has been having some technical problems for the past few days-- you are not alone in being locked out! The Admin is trying to figure out what the problem is so it can be corrected.Lesa wrote: the website seems to lock me out in the day time for some reason.
