McArthurs

Post by patjohn » Tue Feb 14, 2012 11:49 am

I am searching for the marriage of Peter McArthur and Janet ( possibly Jessie) Wilson 1820 - 1860 and also the birth of their children Agnes circa 1844, Alice circa 1849 and David circa 1858 or 1860 - his marriage and death dates show a 3 year age discrepancy. I have tried both scotland's people and family search and can't find them. Can anyone help? Thank you

Have had a look at FamilySearch as well. There is one possibility David James Mcarthur born 18 Feb 1858 to a Mary McArthur. As there is no father given it is likely that he was illegitimate and it is possible that Mary was a relative of Peter's and he was adopted by Peter. I also note that Janet was still alive on the 1861 Census, if I have the correct family they were staying at 6 New Street Pollockshaws. If this is the correct family David would have been born around 1858.

I tried the 1861 census on scotland's people but it is so faint I can't read it. Are there any other family noted? This might clarify if it is the correct family Did you get the 1861 census on family search i didn't think they had the scottish census

Thanks

Hi Pat,

Go back to ScotlandsPeople. On the page where you download the image, there is a link to click on, where you can tell them that the image quality is poor. They will normally make a fresh scan from the original book and e-mail a copy to you. Eventually the new copy will go online.

Websites such as FamilySearch and FindMyPast may have census indexes and transcriptions, but the images of the original pages of these records are only available online at ScotlandsPeople

All the best,

Hi Pat

I was using the Ancestry transcription to get an idea of his age (should be fairly accurate at this age I hope) and place of birth so that I could have a look for his birth. As Andrew says you have to go to the original image on ScotlandsPeople or microfilm copy at a library etc to ensure that you have the correct details as transcriptions can be inaccurate depending on the skills of the transcriber. From the details of the family you have given they appear to tie up with names and ages.

Hello Pat,

I thought I was on to something when I saw David's name in 1871 was given as Donald but I've searched for a Donald and Daniel (these are interchangeable) but still no joy.

At the moment Eric's idea seems the most likely.

Have you ever looked at Alice's marriage entry to see what she gives as her parents' names? At first I thought Peter had married 2 separate Janet's but it looks like the same couple in 1851.

There is a very slight chance of a poorhouse application for Janet/Jessie as she lived (with David) till 1895. I'll have a look hopefully sometime soon as i'm getting quite a list going now! :D

Regards,
Annette
