Surname *arr*ck Forename William 1891 census age range 49 to 51 all area's you get 3 hits
1901 census age range 59 to 61 all area's you get 1 hit

Just a thought, have you searched for his death just incase as it may have his mother's maiden name attached on the search list that comes up. If you leave area blank, you will get a list of 25 names, just adding a year at a time if that makes sense until you have 25 then do same again for next 25 - worth the try.

Hi Annie,

Yes, thanks for the suggestion, but I spent a day in Edinburgh a while back, doing just that for much of the time. Sadly had no luck.

This is my main line and it's very frustrating to be stuck at all angles with it. Just can't get past him, his two brother's or their father. And if they're hiding in plain view after all this, I'll be so.... ....relieved!

Out-Pensioners: those who lived 'Out', at home and abroad. All records for Out-Pensioners are held by the National Archives at Kew. If you find details of an ancestor in a Census it is a definite indication that he was an Out-Pensioner

Doesn't indicate if someone not on the census is an in-pensioner? Could it be that in pensioners were not mentioned by their full name on the census? Either way it seems the records are at Kew or the Chelsea Hospital - for 5 pounds the latter will check for you - snail mail only.

Hi Trish,

I had looked at this before but ruled out finding anything about him from Chelsea because he was an 'out' pensioner - found nothing more than FMP at Kew depite several visits. However, now I'm thinking that, as I can't find him on any census or anything else anywhere, perhaps he started out 'out' in 1882 (when he first retired), but for some reason - illness perhaps - he may have ended up 'in' by 1891. He wasn't married when he retired, and given his age then (mid 40s) it seems unlikely he married afterward. And, as far as I'm aware, he had no known family in the country by that point (at least 3 of his siblings were already dead and the only other one, a mariner, could have been anywhere in the world - I'm still looking for him too!). So if he had become ill or debilitated in some way, there was noone to look after him.

Think I may send off the cheque now anyway and see one way or the other - you never know.

Hi Ann,
I wouldn't rule out marriage. My 3x great grand father was a soldier in the East Indies and
when he retired from the army came home and married a woman 24 years his junior.
He would have been 44/45 and she was 20.
Brought home a son with him whose mother was " rumoured to be Indian" and if he was actually
married abroad I've never managed to find out.
