Rose family of Leith
Hi
I am new to researching my family tree and very much enjoying it but am now in need of a bit of advice.
Through taking a load of information from relatives and then using Scotlands People I have managed to trace my ancestors a fair way back but am now stuck to know how to progress any further. Can anyone suggest how I should go from here or where to look.
Below is as far as I got.
John Rose
b. 25/7/1803 North Leith, parents – William Rose (a Carpenter) and Anne Charlotte
baptised 7/8/1803
married 1/12/1826 to Christina Hutton, North Leith
census 1841, living on Dock Pl, N. Leith with Christina and children.
Ann Charlotte died - 11/8/1811 in North Leith age 42. Spouse of Wm Rose (a Carpenter) so I am confident this is the correct person.
William (a Carpenter) died 23/9/1825 in Coupar St, North Leith age 54. (assuming this is the right person he is the only suitable William Rose to die in the area in the first half of the 1800s - I assume he remained in N. Leith as his son was still there in 1826 and 1841).
The only possible marriage record is of William and Ann Charlot in Nairn in 1799.
There is one record of an Ann Charlott being born in Edinburgh in 1766.
There is a William Rose born in Edinburgh in 1765, but there are plenty others born around that time in other parts of the country.
How do I go about checking which are my William and Ann?
If people have moved from one area to another how do I confirm this?
Now that I seem to have hit a brick wall with birth/marriage/death records what other sources should I be looking at?
So far I have not made any connection to the lime juice Rose of leith family despite being in the same area at the same time.
Thanks in anticipation
Tim Rose

Re: Rose family of Leith
Greetings.
Getting late so just had a quick look to see if the family name pops up, and it did. Leave you the pleasure of finding out what records the Parish Films hold. If you want site navigation assistance just come back to us.
Hugh WALLIS site search for ROSE – North Leith - Midlothian Parish.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... hian.htm#H
then search by clicking on the film of interest and following the prompts...... as per example results:-
1-25 of 49 results for >Name: ROSE, Batch Number: C195063 [Christenings/Births]
https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... rname:rose~ %2Bbatch_number:C195063
1-2 of 2 results for >Name: ROSE, Batch Number: M195067 [Marriages]
https://www.familysearch.org/search/rec ... rname:rose~ %2Bbatch_number:M195067
Just two films I looked at, so try the others for more of the family ROSE records.
Happy hunting.

Re: Rose family of Leith
Hello Tim and welcome to Talking Scot!
Congratulations on getting so far back in your family research! You have now arrived at a point in time where further progress is often a matter of luck and the right records still surviving. Before 1855, registration of births, marriages and deaths was not compulsory. The OPR records on Scotlands People are what remain from those kept in Church of Scotland parishes. If you ancestors did not belong to the established church, or if the records have been lost in their parish, then it is very difficult to trace farther back.
You are right to question how it is possible to know if you have found the correct people, since you may be looking for a record that no longer exists and process of elimination won't work! At least Ann has an unusual surname...
If you live near Scotland, there is always the possibility of finding something at the National Archives of Scotland:
http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/
Or in the Edinburgh City Archives:
http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/428/archives
There might be wills or tax lists or kirk session mentions, etc. at one or the other of these places. At the moment, unfortunately, it is difficult to access these records if you are not physically in Scotland.
Someone else may come along with some other ideas.
All the best,
Sarah

My first thought too was - Well Done, at getting as far as you have.
I had a look at the wills on ScotlandsPeople:
looking for a William Rose [anytime anywhere] brings up 2 pages of results - sadly none of them seem to fit 'your' man.
However there is a few in the Nairn/Moray area which could rule in or out the marriage you found.
It seems to be a more common name in the Moray Firth area.
Looking for children of William Rose & Ann Charlotte gives:
James, July 1803 in Leith and Walter Goalen 1805 also in Leith, an Elizabeth Cochrane Rose 1800 in Nairn [again she could a be a different family or proof they moved south].
The Goalen middle name could be interesting.
Sorry I've no concrete answers, just more alleys to lose yourself in.

Re: Rose family of Leith
Just an observation; the surname Rose tends to be concentrated in the area around Nairn - from Kilravock Castle (pronounced Kil-rock)area the Castle still being owned as far as I am aware by the Rose family. I would not be at all surprised if the search further back leads you to that area.
Roses obviously moved both north and south of that area, but that tends to be where, historically, you will find the name is concentrated.
Walter Goalen - one of my lot, a ship builder in Leith d. 1792. I wonder if being a carpenter there was some family friendship or connection and the child is named after my 4th gr grandfather Walter?
Best wishes
Lesley
p.s. no sign of any Rose MI in the North Leith churchyard. Does not mean they are not buried there though....! If you are able to check the Kirk Session records you may find some mention if you are lucky. (not online, can be seen at Edinburgh and some other Scottish archives)

Now that IS interesting. Ships in those days had a great need of carpenters so there is every possibility of a connection.LesleyB wrote: Walter Goalen - one of my lot, a ship builder in Leith d. 1792. Re: Rose family of Leith
Thanks for the replies folks.
I am aware that the Roses originate around Nairn and that was one of the things that prompted me to start investigating. I have recently moved from Edinburgh (where most of my branch of the Roses still live - although over the generations they have moved 4 or 5 miles south of North Leith!) to StrathNairn, barely 10 miles from Kilravock and would like to know if I have just 'moved home' again.
I do wonder about Walter Goalen, pretty much everyone in the family (with the exception of my generation) is named after someone else in the family. There are no other Walters (or goalens) that I have found. I hadn't thought of him being named after someone other than family but why not.
I think I will see about a trip to read the kirk session records next time I am in Edinburgh.

Re: Rose family of Leith
Greetings again Tim.
Did a quick middle name search but only came up with four in Lothian parishes, and quite close together. Are any of these surnames significant in your lines?
Hugh WALLIS - middle name search for GOALEN = 4 hits 1860 to 1870 FOX, DUNCAN, COCKBURN, Mc DADE - did not find any other Lothian hits.

No, none of those names are familiar but thanks for searching. However, how do you do a search by middle name? That could be really useful but I can't work out how to do it.
