Hi I am looking for any information about my grandfather Robert Ferguson. He was born 12 May 1891 at Glengarnock Ayrshire and spent most of his early life in Kilwinning. His father was also Robert and his mother Mary Alexander Mitchell. My grandfather was possibly in the Durham light Infantry and then after WW1 joined the airforce and spent a number of years abroad in Egypt and Malta. I am particularly interested in his time in the Royal Airforce during the 1920s and 1930s. I have searched for any military records but found nothing , I understand they may have been destroyed. He married Mary Emily McKenzie April 1913 in Sunderland, emigrated to Australia in 1949 and died 4 March 1961. Any information would be appreciated.

Have you checked the census for 1901 and 1911? That may give you some more information about him & his family.

Hi Lesley, Thanks I had checked out the census and got some information about the family. I will check out the web pages. Not sure what his rank was in the RAF.

Do you know whether he was a pilot or ground crew or was there any mention of a particular Squadron?
The National Archives Medal Card index has three Robert Ferguson’s in the D.L.I.

The C.W.G.C. has a 1917 death for 43558. The other two, 25440 and 1742, appear to have survived the War. 1742 was also in the East Kent Regiment. There was also an R. Ferguson 4437857 who survived. Ancestry also has these cards, but scanned both sides, occasionally with extra information.
If he was a volunteer early in the War he could have chosen his regiment, but after conscription was introduced in 1916 there was no choice and he could have ended up anywhere. About two thirds of Army personnel records were destroyed by WW2 bombing.
As with the R.A.F., if he was still in the Army after 1920 his records would have to be applied for via the Veterans UK website.
If he was an officer in either Army or R.A.F his promotions would be in the London Gazette.
