Lessel.....

Post by Ted » Mon Sep 12, 2005 2:15 pm

Hi Everyone

Have any of you ever heard of the name Lessel - or what its origins / meaning are? I have recently traced an ancestor - Lessel Stephen Allan Bn 1863 and 2 sons Lessel Allan Bn 1883 (died at birth) and Lessel Allan Bn 1890 - all in Aberdeenshire.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Best regards

Ted

Hullo Ted

One of my uncles was James Lessels LIVINGSTON. Never have discovered where he got the name. I did notice though during my searches that it was fairly common in Aberdeenshire and not unknown in other parts of the east coast of Scotland

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Black's "The Surnames of Scotland" reports LESSELS as Anglo-Norman in origin, - the original family owning the lands of Forgrund in Fife. The surname is a spelling variant of LASCELLES according to Black.

Hi

In my children's tree have come across various people called Lessels, Lassels and/or Lascelles. They are all originally from Fife though they moved up the East Coast as far as Angus. There are definitely some present day Lessels around here.

Hi Ted

I was searching the net for something else and it brought up your chat thread, and seeing as I'm a Lessels thought it was worth replying!

Although born in England (brave posting on a Scot's website!) my father's side of the family is from the Fife area (so I do have Scottish blood!). I can remember visiting my great grandparents somewhere in that area about 30 odd years ago. My fathers father died when he was very young (during the war) so the name Lessels kind of stopped there. However, I know my father has many cousins etc in Scotland but as with all these things, you drift apart.

As for the name Lessels, it comes from Lascelles which is a family that came from France in 1700 and settled in Yorkshire. However, you can trace the Lascelles part very far back......if you've got the time. Do a search on google and you'll find more details.

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard

Firstly welcome to TS - you'll find everyone here very friendly and truly willing to help - you do not have to be Scottish - the members here are from all over the globe.

Thanks for your info - every bit helps. I take it that your info refers to the surname Lessels - and I know that the name has some roots in Fife. As you will see from this thread the name is a forname in part of my line.

Dip your toe in the water here if you want help to trace any of your Fife lot - if you post up some details you will be amazed at how much help you get here.

Best regards

Ted

I'm new to this forum, new to genealogy, and the thread is a little old, but my mother is a Lessel. Her grandfather Edwin James King Lessel (1840-1880) came over from Scotland some time before 1860 with his younger brothers. The three of them appear on the 1860 US census, listed only by their initials. The younger brothers do not appear on the US Census after that, or anywhere else I've looked on-line. My mother does not know what part of Scotland her grandfather came from, and I haven't gotten into the research far enough to find out.

EJK landed in Nova Scotia, moved to New Jersey, maybe New York, Alabama (where he enlisted in the Mobile Scotch Guards in the "late unpleasantness"), attended two seminaries in New York, ministered in Connecticut, was sent as the first Episcopal minister in Deadwood, Dakota Territories, and as his health failed, was sent back to New York city to die. Then, somehow, his widow ended up in Colorado Springs, before moving to Mobile. It strikes me that this is quite a bit of traveling by modern standards, to say nothing of the 19th century. On both sides of my mother's family there seemed to be a regular path worn between New York/New Jersey/Connecticut and Mobile, Alabama and back.

Well, that's about all I can remember without my files. Anyone think they might be related to me?
