i am trying to find anything out about sarah potts born 1898 ayr scotland at 99 cross street ayr her mother was sarah potts ,sarah married john kelly in 1899 in wallace town ayr. i cant find a marriage or death for mary as i dont know if she took the name kelly after her mother married john kelly.can anyone help with any ideas.

I'm a bit confused on the details here. Are you looking for someone named Sarah or Mary? Was she called ___ Potts because that was her mother's maiden surname and she was illegitimate, or was her mother formerly married to a Mr. Potts? All of these things could make a difference in the way we would go about searching for this person.

sorry sarah, it is mary potts i am trying to find out about. sarah potts is mary's mother potts is mary's mothers maiden name. my mistake. mary potts was born 1898 ayr. thanks cathy. i have tried to find her in scotlands people all i could find was her birth.as i said i dont know if she got married.

I see on ScotlandsPeople that the marriage was actually in 1898, the same year that Mary was born. Do you have the birth certificate to show whether or not John may have actually been the father? There should be a correction to the certificate if the parents married after the birth. That at least would make it clear whether or not she would be known as Potts or Kelly. I'm guessing this is the family in 1901:

99 Cross St, Ayr, Ayrshire
John Kelly, 50, Head, born Ireland, Occupation "Shoe Croaker" on Ancestry; "Stone Breaker" on Findmypast
Sarah Kelly, 36, Wife, born Ireland
Mary Kelly, 3, Daur, born Ayr
Susan Kelly, 1, Daur, born Ayr

Since this is the same address at which Mary was born, I'm betting that she was John's daughter and if she married it would be under the name of Kelly. Unfortunately, there are w-a-y too many Mary Kellys in Scotland to easily find her marriage without spending a fortune. The exception would be if you could spend a day at the Scotlands People Centre and look at all of them for the price of one day's research!

Hi Cathy,

The death of Sarah Kelly (ms. Potts) is easily found on ScotlandsPeople. On her death certificate you will find the names of her parents. On a search for Sarah Kelly, other surname Potts will give you only one result, and the location will be no surprise to you. The death certificate gives no cause of death, but there is an RCE (entry in the Register of Corrected Entries) which gives a little more information regarding the cause of death. As she is listed as a widow, it gives a fairly short span of years for her husband's death.

A search on ScotlandsPeople for John's death certificate between 1901 and the year of Sarah's death, in Ayr will easily give you his death certificate and the names of his parents.

hi sarah, thanks for your help. yes i have birth cert for mary potts she was registered as mary potts and only her mother is on the cert. b 1898. cathy.
