Information about Elizabeth Rankin

Post by Lizra » Wed Oct 17, 2012 9:07 pm

Can anyone help me find information about Elizabeth Rankin, who was born in 1873 at Cambusnethan. Her parents were William and Janet (nee Morton). Elizabeth had a sister called Jane who was born in 1871, and mybe a brother. I believe at some point she lived in Kirkcaldy before moving to Yorkshire. I know the whereabouts of her then, but would be very grateful for information prior to that.

Here they are in 1881 at Main St, Wishaw

William Rankin 45 Blacksmith, born Glasgow
Janet Rankin 42 born Coatbridge
Jessie Rankin 11
Jane Rankin 9
Elizabeth Rankin 7
Marion Rankin 5
Alexander Rankin 2

They are also at Wishaw in 1861 and 1871.

William and Janet were married in 1859 at Old Monkland.

You can view the original census and BMD records at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Hello Lizra and [TS_welcome]
You don't mention when Jane moved to Yorkshire, but with the information you gave on the family, they are easy to find in the censuses in Cambusnethan every ten years from 1871-1901. You can learn a lot about her siblings from the census records. It looks to me like she had 3 sisters and one brother. Elizabeth was with them only in 1881-- does this sound right for when you know she left Scotland? When you search for the records, bear in mind that the last name can be spelled either Rankin or Rankine. If I have the correct family, William was a blacksmith and then became a coal merchant. Let me know if you can't find them.

All the best,
Sarah
