Hello Boru,
Have you seen this family in 1851 at Mull Farm, Kirkmaiden?
Thomas Hamilton 50 born Co Armath (as transcribed)
Ann Hamilton 47 born Kirkmaiden
James Hamilton 23
Peter Hamilton 17
Jean Hamilton 12
Sarah Hamilton 12
Agnes Hamilton 6
John Hamilton 2
Did all the family move to Canada?.................Later - yes I see them all there in 1861.
Regards,
Annette

Re: Thomas Hamilton + Ann Mckay
Hello Boru,
I see Annette has found the same family that I have been looking at. You don't say where these people are to be found, but we are both assuming you mean the Hamiltons who came to Canada and were living in Brant, Ontario in 1861. In that census are Thomas (63), Ann (57), Robt (28), Peter (26), John (20) and Sarah (24). All say they were born in Scotland.
By 1871 Thomas was widowed and he is living with son James and still says born in Scotland.
However, the two Scottish censuses in which the family appears (if I have the correct family) tell a different story. Ann and all the children were born in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, but Thomas was born in County Armath, Ireland. You are very lucky that he mentioned the county in 1851!
1841
Mull Farm, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire
Thos Hamilton, 40, born Ireland, Ag Lab
Ann Hamilton, 37, born Wigtownshire
James Hamilton, 13, born Wigtownshire
Robt Hamilton, 10, born Wigtownshire
Peter Hamilton, 8, born Wigtownshire
Thos Hamilton, 5, born Wigtownshire
Jean Hamilton, 3, born Wigtownshire
Sarah Hamilton, 3, born Wigtownshire
John Hamilton, 4Mo, born Wigtownshire
1851
Mull Farm, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire
Thomas Hamilton, 50, Head, born County Armath, Ireland, Labourer
Ann Hamilton, 47, Wife, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire
James Hamilton, 23, Son, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, Labourer
Peter Hamilton, 17, Son, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, Labourer
Jean Hamilton, 12, Daughter, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, At Home
Sarah Hamilton, 12, Daughter, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, At Home
Agnes Hamilton, 6, Daughter, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, At Home
John Hamilton, 2, Son, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, Scholar
Sarah's marriage record appears to be the only one that gives the mother's maiden surname and there it is indeed transcribed as McKay on Ancestry. On Family Search, however, it is transcribed as Mcvey. I can't see any actual images though.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
On most of the children's baptism records indexed at the IGI Anne's name is given as McVae.

Annette

Hi Annette
There is one McVeay family in Kirkmaiden in 1841, James born abt 1793 in Ireland, Margaret abt 1786 in Wigtownshire and Elizabeth abt 1821 in Scotland.
There is also a possible McKay family as well as a Mckie family in 1841, at least one old enough to be Ann's mother and others could be siblings.
All the best,
Sarah

The hand-written original definitely says Armath. It's not a transcription error.SarahND wrote:... Ann and all the children were born in Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, but Thomas was born in County Armath, Ireland. You are very lucky that he mentioned the county in 1851!
John, although listed after his younger siblings is 10 years old (difficult to read as it has been scored through by the person taking data from the page).SarahND wrote:John Hamilton, 2, Son, born Kirkmaiden, Wigtonshire, Scholar

Re: Thomas Hamilton + Ann Mckay
Caught you at the right time, Andrew! Wish I was in Register House at this moment too... Using up your end-of-the year days off?
I had assumed/hoped that John's age was a mistake.
Best wishes,
Sarah
