Re: Gardiners of Dunfermline.
Hello JohnnyG and welcome to Talking Scot! I know you have been a member for a few months, but I think this is your first post
Can you tell us a bit more about how you came to know Thomas' birth year and place? I'm assuming he didn't live long enough to get into the 1851 census, which is the first one that give the exact place of birth. It will give us an idea of what resources you have already searched.
All the best,
Sarah

Re: Gardiners of Dunfermline.
Hello Sarah,
Thanks for responding to my first post.
To date, have found that Thomas Gardiner was born c1754 and was married to Jean Williamson from the Family Search website. IGI Individual Record. Film No 457678.
From the Scotland's People website I have traced their marriage date as 05/06/1779 Ref OPR Marriages 685/002/0041, St Cuthbert's. This document shows the bride's father as Alexander Williamson [Deceased] a Farmer of May Town, Caithness. However, there is no mention of Thomas's parents.
Have traced children of Thomas & Jean from Scotland's People, Old Parish Records Births as follows:
Marrion Gardener, DOB 30/07/1786, OPR Ref 424/0070 0397, Dunfermline.
Jean Gardiner, DOB 26/09/1784, OPR Ref 424/0070 0326, Dunfermline.
Twin sisters, Ann & Elizabeth Gardiner, DOB 13/03/1780, OPR Ref 424/0070 0177, Dunfermline.
John Gardiner, DOB 31/12/1782, Baptised 14/01/1783 in Charlestown, Listed in Baptisms, January 1783 Page 271.
I have been unable to determine when Thomas died.
All the best,
JohnnyG

Re: Gardiners of Dunfermline.
Hello Sarah,
I have finally traced Thomas Gardiner's parents on Scotland's People. Found them on OPR Births Ref 453/00 0030, St Andrews & St Leonards. Thomas was born in 1751 at Boarhills.
His parents were Thomas Gardiner and Cecilia Kilgour.
I had been concentrating on Dunfermline, and hadn't cast a wide enough net.
Oh well, on to the next hurdle.
All the best,
Johnny G

Re: Gardiners of Dunfermline.
Congratulations, Johnny!
As you say, another hurdle successfully jumped
Each time it raises more questions, since it's impossible to be "finished" researching our ancestry. It is always worthwhile to cast a wide net, as people moved around much more in those days than we generally give them credit for-- you have proof of that in the next generation with Jean Williamson being from Caithness, although married in Edinburgh.
Here's to more brick walls broken down in 2013!
