I have just discovered these photographs:
http://www.retronaut.com/2012/04/perths ... -1885-1910
The caption says:
“I was lucky enough to find 200 half plate glass negatives (both wet and dry) in a small antique shop in Scotland. It seems that they are the personal photographs of a commercial photographer from roughly 1885-1910.
“The wonderful thing is because they are personal pictures of family and friends, they are informal, and even smiling. Suddenly bringing the distant unsmiling faces of the past, much closer. These were real people and not stern mannequins in fancy clothes.”

Re: Perthshire Victorians
Aww thankyou for posting ,I love looking at the clothing from this era and I love looking into the faces of the people then.We are so spoilt now in so many ways and lucky to live in a time of antibiotics and other medical advances.I sometimes wonder how folks coped with daily life and loss, the culture during this era is mesmerising to me.I think people worked hard and were very brave. These photos are beautiful ,they really are.Thankyou.

Re: Perthshire Victorians
I just checked my old photos going back to the mid 1800s. Apart from some strange looks the first hint of a smile was in 1910, and she‘s Scottish, and the first teeth were in 1920, and they were Scottish teeth.
I haven’t included children under ten in this count as they wouldn’t know how they were supposed to behave in front of a camera.
