East Lothian Boys Home ??? - 1901 Census.....

Post by stephlangan » Wed Sep 14, 2005 11:52 pm

Hi

Just wondering if anyone has any knowledge of a home for boys in East Lothian. I have a great uncle who was there in the 1901 Census - he was 10 years old and his name was Thomas Cosgove.

I know that after his mother died in the Barnhill Poorhouse in 1894 he and his two older brother were placed into care - we always thought that it was somewhere in Bridgeton as my Great Grandmother who was the eldest of the 4 told the story that she worked so that she could get them out - it broke her to see them in a home. I know that two of the boys ended up being married from her house at 30 Howard Street, but I haven't not been able to find anything about Thomas ( yet ). At this time I am more interest in what kind of place it was that he was in at the time of the 1901 Census and when I do make it back home would a place like the Mitchell have any recordson it.

thanks

Steph

Hi Steph,

What is the enumeration district of this 1901 census report? East Lothian is about 50 miles east of all the other Glasgow area places you mention.

All the best,

Hi Andrew

Here is the info from SP

1901 COSGROVE THOMAS M 10 TRANENT EAST LOTHIAN 722/00 015/00 002

He is listed as a scholar, but other boys are listed as workers,

He is on page two so I purchased page one adn the title at the top read " Return of all the Persons who slept or abode in this institution in the night of Sunday March 31st 1901"

Thanks

Intriguing how the same subject crops up 3 times in as many days !

After similar queries from many people regarding identifying institutions, the subject was taken up by the ScotlandsPeople User Group, and a free facility to look at the first few pages of the enumeration book was added a year or more ago after paying to view a page. This allowed the institution involved to be identified for no further cost, as well as showing the detailed description of the area covered by the enumeration district involved.

For some reason, at the site "upgrade" at the end of May, this facility disappeared. At the last User Group meeting we were promised that this facility would be restored, hopefully in the near future ..........

In this case, one of the header pages which precede the first page of the enumeration details will show full details on the institution involved. Since SP stated clearly at the last User Group meeting a few weeks ago that the free header page view facility is to be restored, I think that it's perfectly reasonable for you to ask for the information to be provided to you now, via the submission of a contact form on the SP site.

I suspect that this institution could turn out to be a so-called "industrial school".

i come from tranent and around 35 years ago we used to pop down and play football against the saint joseph boys. we used to refer to it as a "list d school"- the building is still there but has not been used as a school for many years. it's actually on the outskirts of tranent (next to meadowmill and a mere 1 mile from prestonpans).
