George Milne Smith b.1859

I am trying to find what happened to my great grandfather George Milne Smith who was born in Aberdeen in January 1859 (son of Robert & Euphemia Milne) but seems to disappear after his marriage in Liverpool 1885. George moved to Liverpool from Aberdeen and was living with his married sister in 1881 as an engine fitter. He later married in Liverpool in 1885 when he was recorded as a Mariner. His wife Mary Elizabeth Smith appears in the 1891 and 1901 census in Liverpool but without him. She is still shown as married rather than widowed. I have always assumed George continued going to sea but have found no further record of him. Has anyone come across this name with a matching age?
