Rosie Family History - Arthur Rosie born 1806
I am new to family research, but am making my first visit to Scotland in May. (2013). My maiden name was Rosie and I grew up never meeting anyone with the same surname except immediate family. Another family member has discovered that my great great grandfather, Arthur Rosie, was born in Scotland in 1806. He had 2 brothers in the navy who died in sight of port. I do not know their names or where he was born. As a young man he emigrated to Coverdale, New Brunswick, Canada. He married Elizabeth and they had 3 children, John, Eliza and Winfield. I know this is little to go on, but I am hoping to hear from some other Rosies.

Hi Rosie 1947
Welcome to TalkingScot
and welcome to the swelling numbers of family history seekers. You will find that Scottish records are less costly and fairly easy to find after 1855. Before that you will need to use the OPR (Old Parochial Records) which can be frustratingly lacking in detail for some parishes and totally absent for others. Using scotlandspeople.gov.uk website I found using their free surname search that in 1841 there showed over 200 people with the surname Rosie across Scotland almost all of them in Orkney and Caithness so that appears a logical place to start your search. Try Freecen (freecan.rootsweb.com )which, as the name suggests allows a free search in most areas of Scotland, at least for 1841 and sometimes later census returns too.
The detail you have given s a little sparse to locate an indivual so any other snippets such as occupation, a place name, Elizabeth's maiden name will help since we have members across the globe who all like a good challenge

Re: Rosie Family History - Arthur Rosie born 1806
Hello Rosie and welcome,
In the 1851 census in Coverdale Arthur says he is 37 years old and entered Canada in October 1837. Too bad he didn't stay around for the 1841 census in Scotland! But that seems to give him a birth year of 1815, rather than 1806.
He seems to have then moved to Maine and again, his birth year is somewhat later than you thought. In 1860 he is 45 and in 1870 he is 57. He was in Smyrna, Aroostook County and by 1880 his wife was probably widowed, since she is living with her son and Arthur is not in the household (the relevant part of the census was left blank).
The Aroostook Probate records are up to browse on FamilySearch.org, but I'm not seeing any record for him in the index, although there is an entry for Winfield. Nothing obvious in the Maine Deaths and Burials database either. I was just hoping that the death certificate might give a fuller place of birth than just "Scotland." If you have access to the microfilms of Maine deaths, you could have a look.
All the best,
Sarah

Thank you to Sarah and Russell. Being a "first timer" I am thrilled to have had responses to my posting. I fully realize I have little to go on, but you both have given me some pointers of further places to search. It is heartening to know you and others are out there, taking interest, solving mysteries and being of help and support. Thank you so much.
