looking for a Watson born abt 1865
I am looking for my grandfather william watson born abt 1865 in Midlothian/Edinburgh. His father was also called William and at some point was a Ship's Carpenter. His mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Storment and before my grandfather's birth was a domestic servant. He masrried a Catherine Cattanach Robertson in Blairgowrie in 1901 and died in Dundee in 1930.

Hello Watson and welcome to Talking Scot.watson wrote:I am looking for my grandfather william watson born abt 1865 in Midlothian/Edinburgh. Here is William with his mum? in 1881 at Blairgowrie -
Agnes Stormont 50 Head
Donald Kennedy 23 son
Elizabeth Stormont 52 sister, born Dundee
William Watson 17 nephew, Born Edinburghshire
Jane Stewart 70 boarder
A wee bit of a different story in 1871 - definitely worth a look at the original if you don't already have it.
Agnes Stormont 40 Head
Elizabeth Storment 40 sister in law
Jane Drober 60
Wm Watson 8 son
Is it his birth entry you're looking for?
Where did you get his parent's names?
Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette & watson
I checked the marriage which watson mentioned above. The parent names are given on the 1901 marriage entry. Elizabeth is given as Stormont, no m.s. mentioned so it looks like Elizabeth and William were not married. I suspect William's birth will be listed under Stormont, not Watson.
There is one born in Aberdeen in 1862 with a mother Elizabeth and no father mentioned which may be a possible, through it seems a bit further away from the expected area. There is anothe rborn in 1864 in Dundee to a Betsy Stormont so also a possible - it would not be the first time a place of birth has been consistently given which is not accurate! Dundee seems more likely to me than Abderdeen.
Best wishes
Lesley

I saw the 1864 Dundee too and thought that was the one till I found Betsy and William together on a census record.
I found what I am sure is Donald Kennedy's birth to Agnes easily enough.
Name: Daniel Stormont
Birth Date: 02 Jul 1858
Birthplace: BLAIRGOWRIE,PERTH,SCOTLAND
Mother's Name: Agnes Stormont

Annette

I saw this and discounted it as coincidence - both date and place wrong - but.................LesleyB wrote:Hi Annette & watson

Looking at the 1871 census again I see that Agnes and Elizabeth say they were born at Aberdeen and not Dundee as on other census records.
1841 finds an Agnes and Eliza Stormont of the correct ages living at Aberdeen at what looks like some sort of children's home. They are described as Inmates at School.
Maybe that 1862 birth entry might be worth a look.

Annette

So, an already established link to Aberdeen - the plot thickens! I'd agree a look at that 1862 birth would be interesting, but my credits are too low to view it and it is not yet the end of the month. I wonder if Elizabeth is mentioned as a "domestic servant" on that Abderdeen birth. Still not 100% conclusive if she is, but maybe one step nearer!Looking at the 1871 census again I see that Agnes and Elizabeth say they were born at Aberdeen and not Dundee as on other census records.
Best wishes
