John adams - gardner - South Leith (White - Adams)

Post by scotsgirl44 » Tue Apr 02, 2013 6:24 pm

This is all I have of a descendant on his daughter's (Mary) marriage to John White of Haddington. Eventually their children were registered on the catholic registers. Will be visiting Edinburgh soon ...any ideas on how to trace a gardner.. no luck through census or BMDs. Botanic gradens of Edinburgh - a possibility!

Hi Scotsgirl44,

What dates are you talking about for the marriage and births? And where were the children born / baptised?

All the best,

AndrewP

I'm guessing it may be this marriage on IGI?

Name: John White
Spouse's Name: Mary Adams
Event Date: Jan 1833
Event Place: South Leith,Midlothian,Scotland
Spouse's Father's Name: John Adams
GS Film number: 1067776

- if you have not done so already, it would be worth checking the full entry in the South Leith marriages - South Leith are generally quite informative records and it may give some other info such as where he was living. What about the 1841 census? Is he still alive in 1851 (if so you will be given his birthplace)? Or after 1855 in which case his death may tell you more (e.g. parent names, and maybe if you are lucky, place of work?).

Bear in mind he could be working for private individuals who had large gardens.

Best wishes
Lesley

Yes, this is the marriage record I have and lists Mary's father John as a gardener. I can find no other trace of him in any census or death record. Going through the familysearch.org as well can find no other siblings of Mary. Would there have been a guild specifically for gardeners? There is no record of Mary's birth c 1816 or death but she is in the censuses of 1841 and 1851 when she moved to Glasgow. Her husband John was a ships carpenter and am guessing there was much work to be had on the Clyde at this time.

Have you seen the OPR entry for the son to this marriage, baptised in Leith in 1834? He is mis-indexed by SP (I have reported that to them), and can be found as John WHYTE.

All the best,
