The name was originally changed from Jaentsch . On the 1911 census under the name Garish which should be Gansh there are Otto Gansh born in Germany, Mary Ann,wife and children Otto, Willie and David all born in Dundee. I can trace the birth records of 2 of these children and of subsequent children as well as 2 who had died by the 1911 census. I have no success however in finding the birth record of OTTO aged 5 therfore born circa 1905/1906. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you

There is one Otto G* born Angus in 1906 but not Dundee. Have you looked at this one?

Any relation to Bert Jansch, Scottish folk singer who sadly died in 2011, see Google.

Hi patjohn,
I see birth certificates for twins to this couple in October 1906: William and Eliza Jane Jaentsch (two certificates for the price of one - they are on the same page).
In total on ScotlandsPeople, I see 7 Jaentsch births in Dundee from 1903 to 1921, but none called Otto and none in 1905.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: JAENTSCH/GANSH
No relation to the folk singer as far as I know. I have all the family births except Ott and I also have Otto's marriage record in 1934 and the index of his death record in 1981 . Will get details of his death record next time I am in Edinburgh but the puzzle of his birth remains

Re: JAENTSCH/GANSH
There is an illegitimate birth on 31 Jan 1902 indexed: ROSS OTTO YAENTSCH M ST PETER DUNDEE CITY/ANGUS 282/01 0101 . The birth mother is Margaret Ross. The address of the birth is 14 Fords Lane...same address that Otto and Mary Ann (Ross) were living at when married 28 April 1902. Not sure if Margaret and Mary Ann are one and the same but there is certainly some indication of a connection. I realize the age is off. I looked for a death of baby Otto and didn't see one. There is a death of a child of his some 20 years later though...when he was still using the surname of Ross and a probable adult death that fall within the closure years. Can this be your Otto?
Best wishes
