Kenneth McKenzie and Eliza Robertson (Solved)

Post by LaurieS » Fri Apr 19, 2013 5:57 pm

Hi all
I was wondering if anyone here has any info on these two people:
Kenneth McKenzie
Eliza Robertson

What I know:

I know that my ancestor Jessie Isabel Mackenzie who married Joshua Woods is indeed the child of Kenneth McKenzie and his wife Eliza(Robertson) McKenzie. I have both marriage and death records for Jessie that name both parents, her spouse and her birth date, as well as records of her children's births, while I have no birth or christening record for Jessie, on both her marriage and death records she is noted as having been born in Pugwash Nova Scotia in 1848 and her death record shows she died in Trail BC Canada in 1935.

I also have marriage records for two other daughters that strangely enough married the same man (first Mary, then she died and Christy then married him  ) :

Mary McKenzie married George Chipman Carter in March 1871, Father Kenneth McKenzie Mother Eliza McKenzie, she was born 1850 Pugwash Nova Scotia. She had to have died before 1878 as in 1878 her sister married the same man.

Christina McKenzie married George Chipman Carter Nov. 20th 1878, Father Kenneth McKenzie, mother Eliza Robertson (Mckenzie). Born 1853 Pugwash Nova Scotia.

Most likely but currently unprovable info:

According to my family album Kenneth and Eliza had 8 children, and both were born in Scotland and died in Canada.
The info written in my grandmothers album included the names of the children :
Roderick
Donald or Daniel
Catherine
Mary (as above)
Jessie (as above)
Margaret
Christina(as above)
James

I have located a marriage record for a Kenneth MacKenzie and Eliza Robertson (The only marriage document I could find in any country) with the follow info:
Event date Jan. 08 1834 in Tarbat By Fearn, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
If this is true , then this may also be true:
Birth and Baptisms. Roderick Mclean McKenzie Christened March 29 1835, Born Dec.10 1834 (almost 1 year from the above doc.)
Tarbat By Fearn, Ross and Cromarty, Scotland.
Father Kenneth McKenzie
Mother Elizabeth Robertson.

Please know I have searched all the online stat sites I can think of,and over the last year I have dug up a lot of info not listed here but in the end all I have is a load of possibilities..I have been unable to locate a definitive immigration document, and no definitive birth or death documents.

I imagine this is an old story for most of you, hitting the proverbial brick wall on a search ](*,) , and I understand I may never be able to know for sure, but I want to exhaust every possibility before I give up and put this on the back burner for a time.

Thank you in advance for any lead that anyone may be able to provide.
Laurie

Update ;-).. I just found a census document for Jessie in 1871(The daughter of Eliza and Kenneth, in this census she is still living at home) , and it has the whole family right were they should be .. there is one son missing, the eldest so I am not surprised that he was not living at home at that time.. but every thing else is there and finally I have birth years (more or less ;-) on Kenneth and Eliza, AND the document says they were both born in Scotland.. Donald the second eldest son is listed as born in 1839 and born in Nova Scotia so that is also a clue, I may not know when exactly they immigrated but I do now know it was most likely before 1839.
Anyway just in case anyone is following this I thought I would post a update.

Update 2.. for anyone following :)

I have located a death record for Kenneth in 1771.. and I can not find him in the census records after this so I thought it may be him..

Died 08/08/1871, West River Pictou Nova Scotia,
Birth Ross Shire Scotland,
Married,
Age 67,
Father Murdoch McKenzie,
Mother Janet Mckenzie.
Reported by Roderick McKay? .. if this is just written funny and it Is Roderick Mckenzie then it would make sense as Kenneth's eldest son is Roderick Mckenzie. (Nova Scotia Death Record, and on Family Search)

I have also found a birth record: (Scotlands people)
Born 24/05/1804
Dingwall Ross and Crom. (so pretty much right place if he married Eliza in Tarbath)
Father Murdoch McKenzie
Mother Jannet McPherson

Question 1: How much info is considered enough? would all the above qualify?
If not what else would I be looking for?

Question 2: I have read posts here that refer to "Scottish Naming Conventions" Can any one tell me what these naming conventions would be?

Again thank you for any info ;-)

Well I have managed to find the parents of Kenneth Mackenzie along with Documentation via the North Cumberland Historic Society.
If anyone is interested in the documentation let me know and I can send you what I have.
In Short:
Kenneth Mackenzie and Eliza Mackenzie are buried in the Mackenzie cemetery at the gulf shore. I have an image of the Grave stone but am unsure how to upload it here. Kenneth was born in 1802 and died in 1880, Eliza born in 1812 and Died 1892.
His parents are:
Father: Roderick Roy Mackenzie (came to PEI 1803 on the "Polly" ) Birth and Death date unknown . He is buried in the Mackenzie cemetery beside his first wife, but the head stone has no dates for him, just his name.
Mother: Catherine Sage Mackenzie. Died Jan.5th 1820 at 58 years.
(While I have the transcript of the Cemetery I am awaiting an image of the actual head stone)
I am still unsure of Eliza's parentage but I know she and Kenneth met in Fox Harbor while the Mackenzie family lived there for a short period of time before the move to the Gulf Shore.
Both Roderick and Catherine are documented very well and it turns out that Roderick is of the Applecross Mackenzie line, and by rights should have been the representative of this line ..Lucky for my family he was overlooked ;-).
Below is a short explanation :
V. JOHN MACKENZIE, fifth of Applecross, who married Anne, only daughter of Sir Colin Mackenzie, IV of Coul, without issue. He willed the estate of Applecross away from his brother Kenneth [This John, the last of this family, deprived his brother, Kenneth, of the property, and passed it in favour of Thomas Mackenzie of Highfield, his sister's son. In order to set aside the legal succession, and to prevent his brother, Kenneth, from marrying, he allowed only L80 yearly for his subsistence during his lifetime, which small allowance made it inadequate for him to rear and support a family, so that in all probability this has been the cause of making the family extinct. After this Kenneth the succession should have reverted back to Roderick Mackenzie, a descendant of Roderick, second son of John, II. of Applecross, who went to Nova Scotia in 1802, or failing the family of this Rory, next to his brother's family, Malcolm, who died a few years ago in Kishorn, and failing heirs of that family to the other descendants of John of Applecross, viz.: Kenneth of Auldinie, and John, killed at Sheriffmuir in 1715. - "MS. of the Family," written in 1828.] to the son of his Sister Mary, Thomas Mackenzie, IV. of Highfield, by whom he was succeeded as VI. THOMAS MACKENZIE, sixth of Applecross and IV. of Highfield.

Laurie,

My great grandmother was Christina Carter. She passed on in 1940 in Fort Langley. I am trying to get information about her husband's children to his first wife Mary. I know that three of the children passed away but I have not found out anything about Anna Chipman Carter. I am fairly new to this process and am interested in any stories about the family in NS since George and Christina moved to Fort Langley shortly after they were married. Jim R
