Graham Sheritt & Mary Hampton/Tavendale

Post by darylrodger » Sun Jun 02, 2013 5:09 pm

Hi,

I'm having trouble trying to find any info on some ancestors of mine.

Their names are; Graham Sherrit (stone mason) according to the 1851 census, and Mary Hampton/Hanton Tavendale.
They had an illegitimate daughter in 1848, my ggxgrandmother Mary Shirret.
According to Mary's death certificate in 1892, her reputed father Graham was deceased and her mother Mary had married a chap
named Alexander Tavendale. I've tried looking for a death for Graham, and marriage & death of Mary but without success.

Can anyone help ?

Regards,

Daryl

There is a death indexed at SP of a Mary Hampton/Tavendale in 1904 at Angus.

Hi Nelmit,

Thanks for that, but I've already looked at that on SP and it's not the right one.
Her husband's name on that certificate is James, not Alexander unfortunately :( .

Daryl

Who was the death informant? Was it perhaps someone who did not know the deceased very well? Does the age seem about right? Is the area where you would expect her to be? The surnames are both quite uncommon, so it seems quite a coincidence to find someone with the same first name and the same surnames combination.

Best wishes
Lesley

I agree with Lesley and I think it was probably the person who registered Mary Bruce's death who may have go it wrong. Then again I can't find a marriage indexed at SP.

What was the address on Mary Tavendale's death entry?

Regards,
Annette

Later.......................mmmm looks like it was a very strange coincidence as I found a marriage of a James Tevendale and Mary Hampton in 1843.

The family are at Montrose in 1861.

Hi Nelmit,

I've had another look at Mary Tavendale's death cert. and it's her son-in-law who registered her death.
His name was Allan ? (I can't decipher his last name) so I'll upload the cert. She died on 4th Jan 1904 in 4 Southesk Terr, Montrose aged 71, so she was born in 1833. This makes her too young to have had her daughter in 1848. I was hoping she died in Brechin not Montrose, as that's where most of the family lived at that time.

According to Mary Shirret Bruce's death cert. her mother Mary Hampton married Alexander Tavendale after having her illegitimate daughter.

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

The son-in-law was Allan Herschell, 111 Northesk Road, Montrose.

Hi Daryl,

Mary who died in 1904 (widow of James) was widowed in 1883. The 1883 death certificate is for James Tavendale, married to Mary Hampton. The couple can be followed on the censuses of 1851 to 1881, then the widow Mary on the censuses of 1891 and 1901.

The misinformation is on the 1892 death certificate of Mary Bruce, daughter of Graham Sherrit (reputed father) and Mary Hampton, afterwards married to Alexander Tavendale. This (mis)information was given by the widower, David Bruce.

Allan Herschell's marriage certificate lists his bride's parents as James and Mary Tavendale.

The proclamation of banns of James Tevendale and Mary Hampton is in the OPR in 1842.

All the best,

AndrewP

This is sooo frustrating as a look at the 1901 census shows 4 Southesk Terr to be in Brechin but unfortunately Mary isn't living there in 1901. As far as I can gather she is the Mary Hanton, Cook age 71 at Montrose in 1901.

What are her parent's names Daryl?

Annette
