Mary Boag, Govan.....

Post by fortunata » Fri Sep 16, 2005 10:36 pm

Hope i have posted this in the right place! :) I am looking for information regarding the family of my great grandmother, Mary Boag, who was born 25.5.1873 in Govan. Her parents were from Ireland (married over there) and Mary in turn married my gtgt grandfather Robert Donaldson on 2.6.1893 in Old Kilpatrick. Mary was a french polisher, and she and Robert had six children. I would like to find out more about her and her parents, and whether she had brothers and sisters. I think there was a brother who may have gone to america, but have very few details. If anyone can help at all, or suggest where i might start looking, i would be very grateful. :) thanks

Hello Cathy,
Marys' parents names were John Bogue(as spelt on old document - not sure when spelling changed) and Ellen (or possibly Helen) Halliday. They were married on 2.4.1871 at St Annes Church, Belfast. Thats about all i have on her parents, so i suppose that between them marrying and Mary being born, they moved to scotland. By the time of Marys' marriage, her father was deceased.

Hi,
I had a look at 1881 census. There were a couple of possibles for Mary,
but not with correct parents.(Lowlands).
You should also post the parents of John.
Chances are you will find the deaths of at least some of the parents on
scotlandspeople site.
There are lots of friendly people on this site, and I'm sure someone will be able to help.

Hi fortunata

Welcome to the board! I had a couple credits lying around so had a look for a death of Mary's mom......this may be her but I don't have enough credits to view it :?

1 1901 BOAG HELEN HALLIDAY F 48 OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK DUNBARTON 501/00 0242

I also looked for the family on the 1881 census......and there is a slight possibility this is the family?????....based on names...some ages....and location of death of the above Helen.....what do you think??? There is really nothing else that comes close.....I'm not convinced myself that it's them but it might be even though Helen's age is off...unless her death age is off....hmmmmmm

:D Hello Jean!

Thanks for looking for me, i think that is most probably Marys mum, did you view this on scotlands people? The family details certainly seem to fit in some ways, i suppose its possible there were variations in the surnames as i have it as Bogue on a document from ireland. It is certainly worth following up. Appreciate your help. :)

Hi again...yes I did find the death indexed on Scotland's People. It will cost you 1 credit for a search and 5 credits to view a particular record from a search. In the case of searching for the death of a married woman there is an option to search by additional surnames so that it is very difficult to not find who you are looking for. In this case this was the only result that appeared so you have a 50-50 chance that it's her! I know where my money is riding

......as for the census data....that's a little trickier. If it is them then the record is great in that you pick up a nephew's surname and better places of birth in Ireland. As for the record being indexed as BAYNE.....that just might be due to the quality of handwriting on the original....they might not have been recorded as BAYNE but it got taken as that by the indexer.

Time will tell!! Looks like you have some work to do

Best wishes

Hello Jean,

Think you are right, i do have some work to do, and i am sure it will be a very interesting journey of discovery. On reading your first reply, i couldnt help but notice that the dwelling was given as tent 16, interesting!! Do you think it is short for tenement, or literally a tent??? :D

Hi fortunata

To be honest...I hivnae clue!! But a search of the 1881 census quickly shows that most folk enumerated with "tent" in their address were actually tent dwelling itinerant gypsies, tinsmiths, or hawkers with a few out of work whelk gatherers for good measure. However when you get to Old Kilpatrick there is something like 12 separate household at "Tent16", 11 families at "Tent 15", 13 at "Tent 14, and 13 or so at "Tent 12"....except most of these folk are fully employed. Doesn't sound like a real tent dwelling except maybe it was some kind of temporary housing?? I'm hoping someone can jump in here and shed some light on this!!! :!: :D

Best wishes
Jean

PS...hope you have good luck in sorting them out.....and hope you let us all know how you're getting on
