Hi brebou
...and welcome to Talking Scot :D

Have you searched for him in the census years? 1901 he should be with his family, and the 1911 census would also be worth looking up, though he may have left home by then and could be more difficult to pinpoint. You can serch teh census at Ancestry and see the original page at ScotlandsPeople. I think you will have to have quite an open mind on the spelling of the surname - I'm sure there will be a few variations!

What sort of information are you looking for?

Best wishes
Lesley

There are records for numerous John Donachies online. One that is close to the right age is 31 year old John D, waiter from 346 Rutherglen Rd Glasgow heading to the US 10 Jan 1923

Also a war service record for John Donachie - 157 Brook Street Dundee - year of birth given as 1895 on one form. Served 1915 through 1919, age given as 21 years 11 months on enlistment (12 Apr 1915) - which about agrees with the 1893 birth (if my maths is working). Service number 1384

There is a user supplied tree on ancestry giving his wife as Jane Weir Fraser (and her death in Canada).

Whether any of these are your John?

The family is easily found at 21 Arthur Street, Dundee in the 1901 census. Peter is a Jute mill foreman. Jessie's mother Jane Grahame is also in the household.

There is a John Donachie, age 30, Cabinet Maker, born in Dundee, who arrived in Boston in July 1923 on his way to Linn, Massachusetts. The nearest relative in the country whence he came is his wife Jane Donachie at 1 So Ellen St, Dundee. He is going to join his uncle Charles Donachie at 7 Oakville St, Linn, Massachusetts and appears to be traveling with a relative James Ross, who is the brother-in-law of Charles Donachie.

His wife Janet and two children Margaret and James arrived in April 1925. Her nearest relative in Scotland was originally written "Mother in Law, Mrs. J. Donachie, 26 Lawson Place, Dundee." This is crossed out and "Father, Joseph Blair, Dundee" was written in.
They are going to join their husband and father John Donachie at 878 Western Ave, West Lynn, Massachusetts.

Is this your family? If you tell us what you already know, it will be easier for us to try to add to that knowledge without wasting time going over old ground.

All the best,
Sarah

Hi Sarah:
Thanks for your response of six months ago!
I am searching for John and Janet (Blair) Donachie and their children (Margaret/James).
The 1930 US census shows the family living in Mount Vernon City, NY whilst the 1940 US census shows the family living in Brooklyn, NY.
Then the trail goes cold... any other information would be appreciated.
Warmest regards,
Brenda

Hello Andrew and [TS_welcome]

I am not related to the Donachies as far as I know, but was just looking for Brenda's family. Since she has just checked back in after a 6 month absence, you have a good chance of connecting with her! You could try sending her a Private Message if she doesn't respond soon.

All the best,
Sarah
