Where did my Campbells come from?

Post by Billiegirl » Mon Jan 06, 2014 6:03 am

Hello everyone. I love this forum and thought someone might have some ideas as to where my gt gt gt grandfather, Graham Campbell's family originated. I have found out that he worked at Kilmory Estate, Lochgilphead, but I can't find any evidence of his birth in Glassary, therefore can't discover his parents names.
He seems to have gallivanted around Scotland a lot, perhaps with his employer.

For example, in 1805 he marries Hannah Wren in Canongate, Edinburgh. Two weeks later his first child Eliza is registered as baptised back in Kilmory. Then, 6 months later, she's baptised again at the little church in Logierait, Perth! :o I know there seem to be quite a few Campbells around Logierait, would this suggest a family connection with that church? I don't think it would be through his wife, as I believe she came from Hereford.

Could people just "drop in " to any old church in Scotland for a second christening, or would they have to be known to the minister?

Maybe some Scots expert can shed some light for me! Thanks......

Hi Billiegirl,

[TS_welcome]

Normally there would be a connection to the parish - where the family was living, where the mother came from, or where the father came from. I haven't heard of a random church being chosen.

All the best,

Hi Billiegirl, and welcome

I haven't looked at the actual OPR images, but I see that at FamilySearch the transcript for Glassary (is this the same as Kilmory and/or Lochgilphead? - it's out of my area) records only the birth on 31 Jan 1805, whereas the Logierait entry gives a baptism as well, on 29 Jul 1805. The suggestion that there might have been two baptisms had been bothering me, since this would have been irregular.

Anyway, if FamilySearch is correct with its transcripts, this does seem to suggest that there was a family connection to Logierait, and that Eliza was born while Graham was working away, and then baptised when they visited relatives later in the year.

Incidentally, I have Campbell ancestors from the Rannoch area of Logierait, but haven't come across a Graham. As you say, there were rather a lot of them there, and I've found it virtually impossible to work out which were mine.

Thanks very much Andrew and Arthur - its great to have your input!
Yes Arthur, Lochgilphead came under Glassary parish. Perhaps these records merely recorded the birth and not the baptism? I think I read somewhere that they were a bit short of ministers in that area at the time.

I had a little search in the Logierait area for Campbells with our recurring family names which are Peter, Eliza, James, Margaret and Graham, but only found one family from the 1860's, by which time my people were sadly but firmly established in England.

I think I'll keep focussing on that area though, now I've had your thoughts on the matter. Thanks again
