Peter Gillespie - Logie 1770 Who Were His Parents ?

Post by darylrodger » Wed Jan 15, 2014 9:57 pm

Hi,
I'm trying to figure out who the parents of my ancestor Peter Gillespie are.
There are 2 possible couples who may be his parents.

William Gillespie & Jean Alexander
M. 26 Apr 1751 in Logie
who had the following children
William b. 26 Jan 1752 in Logie
Janet b. 13 Jan 1754 also in Logie (Stirling)
I'd love to know if they had any more children, and if Peter is one of them.

Peter married Helen Nicol/Nucol on 21 Dec 1770 in Logie, then moved to Alloa.

The other potential parents are;
Thomas Gillespie, (a shoemaker) & Jean Gardiner
M. 26 June 1741 in Moneydie, Perthshire
They had;
Peter b. 10 Apr 1743
Margaret b. 26 Jan 1745
Janet b. 11 Aug 1750
All were born in Fossoway & Tullibole
Is this Peter my ancestor ?

Can anyone help ?

Regards,

Daryl

According to IGI, there is a William Gillespie born to Peter and Helen in 1773 in Alloa, Clackmannan. Not definitive, but it may be an indication that William is Peter's father.

Hi Stewie,

Yes, I knew Peter & Helen's first born son was called William. I think he died as an infant, and think they went on to have
another son also named William.

The William & Jean Gillespie in Logie would have fitted as that's where Peter married in 1770, but since they only
started having children since 1751, Peter would have been very young when he wed Helen.

The other parents, Thomas & Jean had their children in Fossoway & Tulliebole which is near to Logie. The only thing
that rules them out is there are no Thomas's in Peter's children, and the timescale is better.

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Darryl - I was wondering about the marriage in Logie - thinking it might be the bride's parish and Peter came from Alloa - rather than moving there

This marriage is on family search
Name: Gillespie
Spouse's Name: Nuccle
Event Date: 07 Feb 1773
Event Place: Alloa,Clackmannan,Scotland
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M11954-4
System Origin: Scotland-ODM
GS Film number: 1040206

Then I see there is a William Gillespie married to a Mary Nichol having children at the same time as Peter and Helen, so it may be their marriage - or did the preacher get confused - they all got married on the same day - hence no given names?

Are William and Peter brothers? William calls his first son William, 2nd child David and third Peter(brother?) - but only has one daughter called Jean.

Peter calls his 1st son William and 2nd son David (wife's father - so are Mary and Helen sisters?), first daughter Janet (Jean?), 2nd Helen, 3rd Mary (sister of wife?)

If naming patterns are followed, I am thinking there could double up of names - parents of William and Peter would be William and Helen, parents of Mary and Helen would be David and Jean/Janet

The names are somewhat mixed - there may well be missing parish records but I can't find any births to William and Helen/Ellen - neither family have a son Thomas which might be a clue.

A mish mash of thoughts. There is a Hellen Nicoll born 1751 in Dundee, Angus - parents David and Jean Knight - but no sign of a sister Mary

Hi Trish,

Thanks for finding that.

I had another look for Jean & William Gillespie, and they had 2 children in Logie. They married on 26 Apr 1751 in Logie and had William b. 26 Jan 1752,
& Janet b.13 Jan 1754 the rest of their children were born in Edinburgh. I can't find a birth for Peter. I'd like to think that this is Peter's family, but since
finding out they moved through to Edinburgh I'm not sure.

Helen, Peter's wife had a sister named Mary b. 8 July 1750 so she could have married Peter's brother William (if they were related that is).
They married on 7 Feb 1773, which is the record you found. Helen was born on 13 Mar 1748, to David Nicol & Jean Paterson in Alloa and had 2
other siblings Janet & David.

Regards,

Daryl
