Hello Gloria and [TS_welcome]

The only William Marshall, gardener, I can find is in Duns, Berwick in 1841 and in Langton, Berwick in 1851, born in Duns about 1795. Nobody else in the household. Could he have been gardening in Ayrshire when Jane was born? The name is too common to jump to any conclusions, unfortunately.

All the best,
Sarah

Thankyou Sarah. Bit of a brick wall not helped by such common names.

Hi Gloria,

Assuming the "Ayrshire" bit is correct, I searched the OPR births of Ayrshire from 1810 to 1825 for J*an* Marshall, and got 15 results: 1 Jane, 5 Jeans and 9 Janets. Sadly none of these have a father named William. So, if she was born in Ayrshire, it is looking most likely that there is no surviving record of her in the OPRs.

The reasons could be one of the following:
  • She was not baptised
  • She was baptised in a church other than the (Established) Church of Scotland
  • She was baptised in the (Established) Church of Scotland, but no record was made in the registers
  • She was baptised in the (Established) Church of Scotland, but the record has not survived
So unless some other nugget of information is forthcoming, I have my doubts that you will find a birth / baptism record for her.

Sorry to be so negative,

AndrewP

Don't be sorry Andrew, thankyou for looking. Sometimes a different pair of eyes can spot something else.
Thanks for trying
