scott sibling search

Post by brave scott » Thu Feb 13, 2014 12:26 am

Hello everyone,
I am new to this site and looking forward to reading some of the posts before researching my Scott ancestors.
My Great Grandfather,( David Angus Scott born in Dundee in 1873 ) emigrated to Canada in 1910. He brought his wife ( Elizabeth born in Perth in 1872 ) and his 6 sons.( 1 born in Monikie ? )
His 7th son is my Grandfather born in Manitoba in 1912.
My research will be to find out if my GGF had any siblings and did they stay in Scotland ?
His parents may have been Alexander Scott and Janet Fairweather.
Cheers, Don [cheers]

Hi Don,

[TS_welcome]

Your first port of call, if you have not already been there is to find your people in the censuses - in your case 1881, 1891 and 1901 will be the ones of most interest. These should show the family group.

Images of the census pages can be downloaded from http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis. Transcribed indexes of these can be found on other sites, such as Ancestry, but only ScotlandsPeople has the online images for you to see and download.

On ScotlandsPeople, if you search the 1881 census for David Scott (age 7 or 8 ), with an Alexander in the same household, you will get three results. One of them is in a place already known to you. Look at that one and you will find Alexander and Janet, and two of their children. You also need to click on the "page forward" button to see the next page to see two younger children (and three servants living in the same house). The later censuses may show more children born after 1881.

A parent search on the online IGI ( https://familysearch.org/search/collection/igi ) shows two children born to Alexander Scott and Janet Fairweather before that index stops at 1874 for births in Scotland. These two children and their parents match the information found on the 1881 census.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Don
As Andrew has given you a fine welcome already, now for the caution.
This is a highly addictive obsession
For me it started out as a exercise for my Social Work studies, doing a genogram.
Now I am hooked!

Hi Don,

If you haven't done so already the first thing I would look at is David and Elizabeth's marriage entry to confirm that Alexander and Janet are indeed his parents. Looking at census records I'm sure they are but it is always better to confirm.

I have a question - I see Alex, Willie and Arthur travelling with the family in 1910 but they are not with them in 1911..........were they living elsewhere or did they not survive?

Regards,
Annette

Hi everyone,
Hey Stewie, thanks for the warning. Yes this can be addictive but so rewarding. I only wish (as I'm sure a lot of us do) the journey was started much earlier when my grandparents were still alive.

Hi Frances, thanks for the info and yes I would like to confirm Alex and Janet's parents names. From what I found at the Manitoba Genealogical Society, the IGI records Alexander's parents as Andrew Scott (born1816) and Isabel Gibb. They were married Dec. 1839 in Monikie, Angus, Scotland. Andrew's parents were David Scott and Ann Bennett.( I hope I'm going down the right road.)

Hello Annette, Thanks for posting. Yes I have confirmed that Alex and Janet are indeed David's parents. According to the Manitoba Death Record, David Scott died in 1934 and his parents Alex and Janet are listed.
I have the April 30,1910 ship (Cassandra) passenger list which indicates the parents David and Elizabeth Scott and also the 6 boys. Their destination was Maryfield, Saskatchewan.(don't know why) They settled in a little railway town called Butler Manitoba about 25 km from Maryfield. To answer your question, some may have stayed in Maryfield until they settled in Butler(which doesn't exist anymore). The boys ages were as follows; David 15, Alex 14, Willie 11, Arthur 8, James 4 and Albert less than a year old! They all lived a long life with 3 of them serving in both wars.

Hey Annette,
To further answer your question on the whereabouts of the boys Alex, Arthur and William Scott, it seems that according to the 1911 Census of Canada, Alex and Arthur worked on the Chapple's farm and William worked with Roach's farm. ( poor kids had to go out and work at such a young age )

Why is the Canadian Census (which includes 1921) free of charge but not the Scotland Census ? I also find the Scotlandspeople site confusing. (maybe I just can't figure out the pay per view thing.)
I shall carry on!

Cheers all, Don

Hi Don
Scotland's People charge what is relatively a small amount for a document, try some of the other pay for view sites, yikes!
Also the documents you get are scanned from originals, they are not transcripts like other sites, where errors can creep in.
Also living so far away, I have found it invaluable in my searching for my lang deid yins. =D>
When you register and purchase credits, any images you find can be downloaded or they just stay in you previous searches or viewed images indefinitely.
And I can assure you I do not work for or have any affiliation with SP.
As for myself, I have lots (never counted them) in folders in different places in my computer, so they are always there for me.
SP also has guides for searching for ancestors, and I know it can be confusing at times, but if you know the county and district for census' it can narrow things down. Although even us old timers can get a bit stumped at times, that is why the talking scot forum is so helpful.

Hey Stew,
Thanks for the reassurance for I do feel I will find a lot of info on the SP and TS site including this forum especially.
It seems there is just not enough time in the day when searching records, watching the Winter Olympics, shovelling snow and more snow…I'll be back after the Olympics.
Cheers, Don
