William Rodger b. 1838 - What Happened to Him ?

Post by darylrodger » Tue Apr 01, 2014 9:32 pm

Hi,

I hope someone out there can help me find another one of my hubby's ancestors :? .

I'm currently trying to find William Rodger b.1838-41 in Old Monkland to William Rodger & Janet Johnston. (Who died between 1845-1850).
I found him in the 1851, & 1871 census but can't find him living with his family in the 1861 one.

I have a query about the entry for him in the 1871 census, as the one I viewed on SP is different to the record I found on Ancestry. The one on Ancestry has him living at 220 Thistle St. Govan with his father William, sister Jane, & brother James. His occupation is an engine Filler ? (or thats what is says on the SP image). The one I downloaded from SP doesn't have his father, or sister mentioned on it at all. I'm wondering where Ancestry got their record from, if it doesn't match the one on SP ? I see they've misspelled their surname as Roger too.

I've tried looking for him on SP for a marriage & death, but without success.

Any ideas ?

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

For the time being I can answer the question re the 1871 census. William senior and Jane are on the previous page - you will have to pay another 5 credits to see the original.

Hi Annette,

Thanks for that, I now have that image for William. I have a query regarding William's 'condition', as I can't make it out. I don't think it says
'married', so what does it say ?

Daryl

Hi
I reckon that William was 'unmar'{ried} at 30. The handwriting is difficult but 'Engine Fitter' would be his occupation living in Govan. Brother
James is in a related occupation. Other households have an 'iron planer' and a puddler. All occupations linked to shipbuilding.
My guess at marital status was based on the similar entry for the 24 yr old and 14 year old girls in the lower household.
Working on: Oman, Brock, Miller/Millar, in Caithness.
Roan/Rowan, Hastings, Sharp, Lapraik in Ayr & Kirkcudbrightshire.
Johnston, Reside, Lyle all over the place !
McGilvray(spelt 26 different ways)
Watson, Morton, Anderson, Tawse, in Kilrenny

Hi Russell,

Thanks for that, for the life of me I couldn't decipher it.

I've tried to find a marriage, death, and census records 1881 onwards, but without success.
I have a feeling he may have gone abroad, or down south but I'm stumped as to what's happened to him ](*,) .
His brother James is my hubby's great grandfather.

Regards,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

His death is there in Glasgow, between the 1871 and 1881 censuses. He died unmarried. If you search for the death of William Rodgers, in Glasgow, between 1871 and 1881, with a birth year of 1840 ± 1 year, you will get 3 results. Your one is in Kelvin district (he died in the Western Infirmary).

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew,

Thanks so much for finding William. I was concentrating on where he lived in the Gorbals, so didn't realise he died in the Kelvin area in the Western Infirmary.
That means that 3 of his siblings died young without children.

Thanks again for your help.

Regards,

Daryl
