I wondered if anyone could help me trace this ancestor who was named as father of my 2x great-grandmother Christina Warnock in 1907. His wife was Margaret Park (b.20.4.1797), but she appears on this certificate as Margaret Dunn, presumably having re-married at some stage. James does not appear on any census, but I have located a possible birth certificate for him in Rutherglen born 20.2.1793 to parents James Warnock & Christian Scott. However this is a bit speculative - could anyone confirm it or have any other information at all about James Warnock?
Thanks
Anne

Hi Anne,
In addition to my earlier list, using the ScotlandsPeople search, it shows one of the weaknesses of the otherwise very useful online IGI - there are many parishes where the male births / baptisms are omitted.
These can all be found on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: James Warnock possibly born in Rutherglen in 1793
Thanks for your replies Andrew. Yes, the document referred to is indeed the death certificate of the Christina Warnock on the list as Christian christened on 31/10/1830. I have uploaded it as an attachment. The bit that puzzles me is the link between her named father James Warnock and the James who appears in the family of the elder James & Christian Scott, as I seem to have assumed this link without any concrete evidence. The assumption was based on 2 things -
(a) The age seemed about right, but James does not appear on any census so I did not actually know his age
(b) The naming patterns of the younger family look to be a good fit, with the eldest son being James, one of the daughters being Christian and another daughter having a middle name of Scott
Do you think that is enough to make this 'leap of faith'? Or can you think of anything else I can look at to prove or disprove it?
(It's interesting what you say about male names for some parishes being missing. I did not know that before, but now see that it could explain some other discrepancies. Do you know if there is any particular reason why they were omitted?
Many thanks
Anne

Hi Anne,
I see it as a leap of faith. However, I cannot tell you that you are wrong. So far there is no sign of any evidence to prove these are the right people; but equally there is none to say that they are not.
On a slightly different tack, have you seen the 1861 census page with Margaret Dunn, her son James Warnock, and a boarder Agnes Park?
All the best,
AndrewP
