Can anyone help me with a rough family history?

Post by HaggieNZ » Wed Apr 29, 2015 11:01 am

I have been trying to look into my family history but have been having trouble finding much information, or info that doesnt have conflicting information elsewhere. My last last name is Haggie and our family motto is "touch not a cat bot a glove" (the same as a macpherson) and we came from somewhere around inverness.

I also have Macniel blood but that has been easier to find information for.

Any help would be great, I have so far been at a loss as to finding anything useful. Cheers.

Hi HaggieNZ,

[TS_welcome]

What records have you searched? As a starting point, if you are looking in the period 1841 to 1911, have you looked for them in the censuses? These, along with the birth, marriage and death records can be viewed at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk on a pay per view basis.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello HaggieNZ

Welcome to TS. There are a number of records for the surname Haggie on the Scotland's People website. Fortunately, not enough to make searching difficult. However apart from one family who appear to have moved from Fife to Caithness most are in the area around Glasgow and Edinburgh or in Perthshire. I've not seen any in Inverness-shire yet. Good luck with your quest and if you have any specific queries don't hesitate to post them.

Greetings from the Waikato.

Welcome to TalkingScot.

You don't give any approximate time lines, But if it is general searching you would like to do, to narrow down your search criteria, before paying for individual B D & M's, I would start with the on line Free UK Census; and possibly free through a public library or a NZ Genealogy Society membership, search of the UK papers. All to find likely starters.

A while since I did UK ones but when last doing so, I was searching for results in Yorkshire in the 1860's and 1880's. I've also done earlier searches. Tying in a family name with that of a village or an area. Get some curve ball finds at times, which make you completely re-think family movements etc.

Going back even further an odd ball one for Scotland is the Horse Tax registers of, from memory the 1790's. Though with those they may only be indexed by parish/village so you have to have a specific area in mind. Some years since I did that research, but Russell or Andrew will assist with that if your research goes that far.

Rather busy at the moment, but feel free to private message me, if that is your wish. TS have been of tremendous help to me in the past, and they are a great forum community, ever obliging.
