Ancestors of Donald McLean and wife Margaret Cummings

Post by djnordlund » Thu Apr 30, 2015 12:07 am

Donald McLean was born about 1740 in Scotland and died in New Brunswick, Canada in 1803. probably arrived in North America before 1775, but that has not been proven yet. He was a member of the 74th Regiment (Old Argyle Highlanders). This regiment was recruited largely from the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland in 1778, but others were recruited later from the sons of Scotland who were living in Nova Scotia and the territory now known as Maine. Donald seems to have received a grant of land after the war with the American Colonies, in Charlotte County, NB, which was designated for the Penobscot Loyalists. This would indicate that he had been living in "Maine" at the time the Revolution began. His eldest son, Murdock, was born in "Maine" in 1775 according to census records and information given on his cemetery stone.”

Various sources give his father as Murdock, but mother is unknown. Where in Scotland he came from is unknown. Unfortunately, I have even less information on Margaret Cummings. Does anyone have information pertaining either of these two? Or their families in Scotland? Any ideas on where to look? Thanks
