Searching for Angus, Donald, and Hugh Campbell

Post by IssyM » Wed Aug 05, 2015 12:12 am

I am gradually working through a list of Scottish ancestors and have come up against a brick wall with the above brothers. I can only find the family on the 1871 Census.

I know Angus was born in 1858, Donald in 1860 and Hugh in 1863 all in Govan. On the 1871 Census only Hugh is mentioned as a 9 year old, so that doesnt quite add up, but give or take a year doesn't seem to matter. They lived at 76 Burndyke Street, Govan.

Their Mother was Marion or Sarah from Kilnnian on the Isle of Mull, and their Father Hugh from Morven. My 2x Great Grandmother had another family with no marriage record and at times she seems to use both Marion and Sarah as her first name. I try both when researching, but I can't find a death record for her although I do have a marriage certificate for her and Hugh Campbell where she is recorded as a spinster. They married in 1856 on the Isle of Mull and then moved to Govan where he appears to have been living.

I have used up so many credits on Scotlands People as I can only assume that I do not know enough about searching. Is there any other way of finding Cenus records?

Thank you
IssM

Hi IssyM,

The family are there in Govan in 1861: parents Hugh (32, Morvern), Sarah (30, Kilmore), Mary (12, Kilmore), Angus (3, Govan) and Donald (8mo, Govan). I found these on Ancestry - however beware of the transcriptions if you use Ancestry. As an example, Angus Campbell in this family has been transcribed as Angies. However, you are best to see the original document for yourself, and that can only be done at ScotlandsPeople.

A parent search on the online IGI gives the three sons born in Govan, as born to Hugh Campbell and Sarah McArthur.

Kilmore is given as Kilmore, Inverness-shire. However, going by the info that you have, I would expect this should be the parish of Kilmore & Kilninan on the Isle of Mull.

In the 1881 census, there is a good possibility for Donald, as a servant (apprentice blacksmith) living with a Campbell family in Torosay (Isle of Mull), born Glasgow, age 21.

All the best,

AndrewP

Thank you Andrew P, I have found the 1861 census record with your help. I never would have thought of Angies for Angus, just trying to find the one for Donald now in 1881 that you mentioned.
I would like to find Mother Marions death certificate also.
So the research carries on.
Thanks again it is much appreciated.

Hi there,

I did a quick search on Scotland's People using some of the information Andrew found, i.e.

Surname: McArthur (and variants)
Other Surname: Campbell
Sex: Female
From: 1861 to 2013
Birth year: 1830 (+- 5 years)

This gave 21 results, with 3 Marions amongst them (no Sarahs):
16 1894 MCARTHUR MARION CAMPBELL F 60 KILMACOLM /RENFREW 569/00 0051
17 1904 MCARTHUR MARION CAMPBELL F 76 OLD OR WEST KILPATRICK /DUNBARTON 501/00 0099
18 1900 MCARTHUR MARION SPENCE CAMPBELL SPENCE F 72 ROTHESAY /BUTE 558/00 0094

If any of these are correct you it implies you should be able to find them in the 1881/1891 censuses to narrow down the possibilities further.

Regards
Ross
