Christian or Christina Millar/Hay
Hi,
I'm trying to find out what happened to my 4 x great aunt Christian / Christina Millar b. 1st June 1816 in Hamilton, Lanark to Hay Millar & Catherine McCulloch.
I know she married John Hay on 20 Nov 1842 in Edinburgh, but can't find her after that date. She was previously married to John Donaldson in 1840 & Thomas Barrie in 1835 both in Edinburgh. I've tried to look for her death and her husband but without any luck.
Any thoughts ?
Daryl

What about the child?
I take it your lady is the Christina with John donaldson and 3 month old Robin's in the 1841 census.
No obvious sign of either of them under Hay or Donaldson in the 1851 on freecen.
Did try move south or emigrate? Could be worth searching the English census on family search for them

Hi Wilma,
Where did you find them in 1841 census ? I couldn't find John or Christina in the census in Edinburgh, and didn't know they had child.
I'll have another look.
Thanks,
Daryl

Re: Christian or Christina Millar/Hay
Ancestry.com has a Christina Hay, b. abt 1817 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on the 1881 Census. She is living in Newington, Edinburgh St. Cuthberts at 17 Carnegie St. working as a laundress. Her daughter Catherine Drysdale, 38 b 1843 in Edinburgh and grand daughter Christina Drysdale, 13, are both living with her. Maybe this is your Christina Hay?
Carol
This family with Catherine's husband John and two more small children is in England for the 1871 Census.

Sorry couldn't cut and paste from my tablet thingy earlier
I found that on freecen.org.uk
Scotlands people only gives a hit on Christina if you miss out any second forename - curiously.
It does have her being born in Midlothian too though.
Her multiple surnames does make life difficult...

Hi Wilma & Carol,
Found her ! thank you for finding her and her family, I have finally found her death cert on SP. She died in 1885 in Edinburgh aged 64 yrs, interestingly it fails to mention her 2 previous marriages and it states her mother's maiden name was Garvie instead of McCulloch.
Many thanks for your help.

The information on a death certificate is only as good as the information known by the informant to the registrar. If this was someone who only knew her in her later years, then they may not have known about her earlier marriages; and may have been mistaken about her maiden surname.
All the best,

Hi Andrew,
I noticed it was Christina's daughter Catherine, that registered her death so it's surprising she wasn't aware of her grandmother's maiden name and her
mother's previous marriages or is this normal ?
Regards,
Daryl

Re: Christian or Christina Millar/Hay
After our Dad died we found out all kinds of info about his family that we never knew! He just never talked about any of these people and I'm not sure that he knew that much about his own family. I found second cousins of his all over the planet. Your Catherine was born after her mother's previous marriages. If there were no surviving children of those marriages, she might never have known about them. I have at least one death cert for a great great grandfather with the incorrect information on it so it did happen from time to time.
Good luck with the rest of your research!
Carol

Re: Christian or Christina Millar/Hay
Not knowing the correct Mother's maiden name would be quite common.
If a child had ever known her grandmother she would be called Granny Married Name, only if there were a lot of brothers/uncles around would the maiden name be in common use.
I know my own children only know their grandmothers' maiden names because one's parents only died recently and my cousin uses the other as his first name.
My father couldn't tell me his Granny's name and the birth cert was too faded/crumpled to decipher it!
