Hi Alexander81,

[TS_welcome]

Looking at the ScotlandsPeople website, there were no births in West Lothian (or anywhere else in Scotland) in 1890 or thereabouts. Could it be that he was born before his parents' marriage and be registered using his mother's surname?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Alexander81,

I've done a bit more digging. When you look at the 1901 and 1911 censuses, you find that Richard Galbraith living in West Lothian was born in England. Between these two censuses, his mother is widowed and re-married. Richard's youngest sister listed on the 1901 census was born in West Lothian. Her birth certificate gives the date and location in England of her parents' marriage. Her parents were married after Richard's birth. That shows up on the index for Richard's death certificate (it is too recent to view the certificate online), where two surnames are listed (his mother's maiden surname, and Galbraith).

If you go to http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and look at these documents on a pay-per-view basis, you will be able to fill in a lot of details for your research.

Mary's maiden surname leads to many results, when looking for her in England in the 1891 census, even when you select born in Scotland for her. I am assuming she was in England at that time, as her older children were born in England, and her first marriage was in England.

Both of Mary's husbands were living, but not at home at the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses. They both had jobs in the mining industry - they could have been on-shift overnight, and (hopefully) recorded on the census at the mine; or they may have been living away from home for work.

All the best,

AndrewP
