Elizabeth Gillespie/ White When Did She Die ?

Post by darylrodger » Sun Mar 20, 2016 12:12 am

Hi,

I'm trying to find the death of my 4 x great aunt Elizabeth Gillespie. I know she was living with her daughter Christina White in Eglinton St.
in the Gorbals, aged 61 yrs old (b. 17 Jan 1793, Alloa) and her name is misspelled as Gillispie on the 1851 census. There is no mention of
her husband William, so I assume he predeceased her.

I've tried searching for her death before 1855, and after, but can't find anything. Her parents were Peter Gillespie & Helen Nicol/Nucol.

Any ideas ?

Thanks,

Daryl

Hi Daryl,

Have you looked at the death entry of Elizabeth Gillespie/White indexed in 1861?

The 1841 transcription from FREECEN shows quite a different story about where they were born -

Piece: SCT1841/651 Place: New Monkland -Lanarkshire Enumeration District: 3B
Civil Parish: New Monkland Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Clarkston
Folio: 3 Page: 4
Address: Rawyards

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
GLISPIE Elisabeth F 47 England
WHITE Wm M 20 Iron Miner England
WHITE John M 18 England
WHITE Christain F 12 England

Annette

Hi Annette,

Thanks for finding those details regarding Elizabeth.

Elizabeth's death entry you found, where was it that she died ? was it in the Gorbals by any chance ? There is an entry for an Elizabeth
but she's in Tradeston, and her mother's maiden name is Frew not Nicol.

I haven't found them in the 1841 census, and no wonder :? I see she's using her maiden name too and not White,
I wonder if it's because she's widowed or reverted back to Gillespie.

Regards,

Daryl

Quite a few married women in my Scottish families used their maiden name on census records. In most cases they were living with their husbands. Seemed very liberated for the 1800s :D
