James Marshall, house painter, married Agnes Kyle (nee McAslan) 18 July 1873, Bridgeton, Glasgow.
They had two daughters:
Jessie Marshall born 12 July 1877, Bridgeton, Glasgow
Elizabeth (Betsy) Marshall born 28 Feb 1879, Crieff, Perthshire
Agnes (nee McAslan) Marshall died 30 May 1880 in Crieff.
James remarried Ann (surname unknown).
I found the Marshall's listed in the 1891 Scotland Census:
Residence: 16 Apple Wynd, Montrose, Angus
Marshall, James, Head, 40, Perth, Perthshire, Painter
Marshall, Ann, Wife, 44, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Pedlar
Marshall, Jessie, Daughter, 14, Glasgow, Lanarkshire
Marshall, Elizabeth, Daughter, 11, Crieff, Perthshire
I don’t know what happened to the family after 1891. Agnes Marshall (nee McAslan) formerly Kyle was my maternal great great grandmother.
If you are connected or have any information on this family please contact me. Thank you.
Regards,
Glenda

Re: Marshall
HI Glenda,
I had a look to find them, and the first document that I did find was Betsy's death certificate in 1963 in Auchterarder. That certificate names her two late husbands. At age 84, it is unsurprising that her parents were both deceased.
From that death certificate, you can find her 1894 marriage certificate. That certificate shows her mother as Annie (presumably her step-mother in reality) - so you get a maiden surname for her. Annie was noted as deceased on that 1894 marriage certificate, but I see no obvious sign of a death certificate for her; or indeed for James (too many possibilities for him).
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Marshall
A search for “James Marshall house painter” in the whole database of 19C British Library Newspapers gives only two results, and seems to fit the picture, more or less.
The Dundee Courier & Argus, Monday, July 13, 1896
COURT OF SESSION.
PAUPER'S SETTLEMENT CASE
Lord Low closed the record and ordered proof in an action by the Parish Council of Brechin against the Parish Councils of Barony (Glasgow) and Perth. The pursuers sue for payment of £21 18s 9d, the amount expended by them upon the maintenance of Jessie Marshall, and for relief from future maintenance. Jessie Marshall was born in the Barony parish in July, 1876. Her father, James Marshall, house painter, said to be now, or to have been lately, in Forfar. was born in Perth in 1855. The pauper first became chargeable to Brechin parish in July, 1894. In defence it is maintained by the Barony parish that the pauper is of weak intellect, and therefore never acquired a settlement in that parish, but takes the parish of her father's birth. For the Parish Council of Perth it is maintained that there is no inability on the part of the pauper to acquire a settlement, and that therefore the Barony parish is liable.
The Dundee Courier & Argus, Friday, December 04, 1896
Same as above with addition that:-
Lord Low was of opinion that the pauper was unable to acquire a settlement for herself, and that therefore the parish of her father's birth settlement and not the parish of her own birth was liable etc.
Alan
p.s. Was the step mother's name Scott?

Re: Marshall
Hi Alan,
On the 1894 marriage certificate, both bride and groom gave their address as "Model Lodging Home, Brechin". That may imply that they had little money, and hence were being helped by the Parish.
Annie's maiden surname was given as Mackay. However she was deceased by the time that was stated, so was not in a position to confirm her details, and I could find no other documents to verify that name.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: Marshall
Thanks Andrew,
I tried a search for “James Marshall painter”, and just about all the results, for the whole of the UK, are items in the Dundee papers and not mentioned elsewhere. There shouldn't be too many by that name and profession in the Dundee area. The online Dundee papers go up to 1950 but there's nothing after 1900.
Here's a rough summary of those that could be relevant. I suspect that post 1891 there's a couple of them in this lot, one with family, one alone.
Jun 1886 – Forfar Police Court - Theft from his dwelling house in East High Street.
Oct 1893 – Montrose Police Court – drunk in Southesk Street, no fixed residence.
Dec 1894 - Forfar Police Court – Charged with theft, resides Montrose.
Jun 1895 - Forfar Police Court – He and wife Jane Scott etc fighting in his house in Cottie's Wynd.
Dec 1896 – Forfar Police court - Drunk in Castle street, no fixed residence.
Nov 1898 - Stonehaven Sheriff Court – entered house and demanded money, no fixed residence.
Dec 1898 – Arbroath Police Court – assaulted wife, residing in lodging house in Smithy Croft.
Aug 1899 – Montrose Police Court – He and wife Jane Scott, breach of peace in their house in Fraser's Lane
Sep 1899 – Crieff Police Court - trespass by camping without permission at Hollybush.
Aug 1900 - Perth Sheriff Court - appears as witness in labour dispute.
All the best,
Alan

Re: Marshall
Hi Allan & Andrew,
Thanks so much for the information on my elusive Marshall's. I wouldn't have broken down the brick wall without you. I am so appreciative.
Best regards,
Glenda
