I am trying to place this couple and confirm that I have the right ones but getting in a muddle as John seems to have had occupations ranging from commercial traveller, missionary, coal miner, fireman - I am not sure if I have the right John White.
John married Matilda Burleigh in Carriden Linlithgowshire in 1846.
I have them with 5 children, John, Matilda, Peter, Daniel and Jessie. Matilda(senior) died in January 1868 in West Calder.
So I then have a possible entry for John along with a 2nd wife Agnes Fraser (I think) in 1871 census living in Lanark along with Peter, Daniel, Jessie along with Mary who was born in Douglas in 1863, father unknown, mother is Agnes Fraser. John's occupation in 1871 and 1881 is Tea Merchant.
I have a marriage cert for a John White and Agnes Fraser in Lanark in June 1868
I am trying to find death cert of John but struggling without using up credits.
Any help would be very much appreciated

Re: John White and Matilda Burleigh
Searching for death of John White, spouse of Agnes Fraser brings up a record of John Whyte marrying Agnes Fraser 5 June 1868. There are several deaths including John Whyte in 1903 at Family Search using this link https://familysearch.org/search/record/ ... %3Afraser~
You may find a death which corresponds with the last location from the census.

Re: John White and Matilda Burleigh
The 1881 (LDS version) is free of charge on the new ScotlandsPeople site. That reveals a likely family group in Lanark - found by searching for John White, born in Abercorn, c1828.
John, 52, born Abercorn, tea merchant
Agnes, 44, born Douglas
Mary, 18, born Douglas
Daniel, 17, born Bathgate, apprentice millwright
Jessie, 13, born West Calder
Fraser, 8, born Lanark, scholar
Robert, 7, born Lanark, scholar
Edward, 5, born Lanark, scholar
The youngest three are from John's second marriage, and hence their birth certificates lead to Agnes's maiden surname. The birthplaces of John's children to his first wife show this to be the same family group as you have been following.
All the best,
AndrewP

Re: John White and Matilda Burleigh
The family are at Leith in 1901 and John Whyte is still alive age 74.
There is a death in 1908 at Leith of a John Whyte age 81 which could be him but there are other likely John White's in the index too.
A look at newspapers show that Robert and Edward remained Whyte.
Regards,
Annette.

Re: John White and Matilda Burleigh
Thank you all for your help - found John's death certificate - died in 1908 - surname spelt Whyte and it is the correct John.
The multiple occupations threw me a bit - nothing surprises me but these did.
Cheers!
