Agnes Lyons - Barnhill poorhouse/workhouse 1870/80

Post by Leckie90 » Fri Jan 27, 2017 1:06 pm

Hi everyone.

Myself and a relative have came to a dead end tracing one of our anscestors.

Her name was Agnes Lyons and had 2 sons in 1875 + 1877 in Calton, Glasgow named Robert McDade Lyons and Peter Lyons. Both sons are noted as illegitimate and there is no father on the certificates.

I beleive both sons were adopted not long after birth.

My relative beleives she has found a death certificate for her which does not give any note of her parents names.

Anyone with information relating to this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Scott Leckie

Hi Scott and welcome to TS,

Is this the 2 boys boarding in 1881 at Neilston?

John Thomson 59
Mary Thomson 43
John Melven 7
Robert Lyon 6 born Glasgow, boarder
Peter Lyon 3 born Glasgow, boarder

There will most likely be a poorhouse application for them..have you seen that? The chances are there will also be one for Agnes which should give her birth details.

If you have the birth entries for the boys what address was given?

Regards,
Annette

Hi Annette,

Many thanks for the reply and info.

Sounds like them.

I have managed to get a hold of the death record for her which states Barnhill poor house and we have a birth certificate which looks likely to be her due to the dates + her fathers name mathes one of her sons.

I have heard there are records for the poor house at the Mitchell library in Glasgow so I'm planning to go have a look over the coming months.

The 2 boys were born in Calton & Blackfriars districts of Glasgow in 1875 + 1877.

Thanks

Scott
