Hello Joyce

Have you tried or joined www.genesreunited.co.uk ? this is a good way to find "living" family researching the same names and you never know you may find cousins you didnt know you had or knew you had but had never met them like i did. You do have to pay to join but may be well worth it.
Just in case...............there is someone with an Andrew Morgan

Andrew 1889 Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland

Good luck

If Andrew married and had children in Scotland then it's quite straightforward to trace forward to possible living relations in Scotland in quite a short time and for reasonable cost.

If he moved down to England, then that's an entirely and much more difficult matter, - not impossible but time consuming and expensive

But all may not be lost, as Andrew had a few siblings...........

James Cowan Morgan, Mother: Mary Darge Melrose

Marriage: 05 JUN 1862 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

ANNIE SCOTT MORGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 18 JUL 1863 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
(married James SMART 1908, a bit old for children)

JANE MARSHALL MORGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 31 DEC 1866 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
(married Peter Wishart 1894, 2 children by 1901)

HARRIET MARY MORGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 11 APR 1869 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
(married John Dodds 1924, far too old for children)

ALEXANDER MELROSE MORGAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 07 NOV 1871 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
(died 1915, single)

KATE ANDRINA MARGAN [sic] - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 05 AUG 1873 Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
(married William G Mackidd 1902)

James Cowan MORGAN b1876
(married Violet Dalgleish 1899
their son James Cowan Morgan married Christina Drysdale 1924)

If I was doing a forward search on this line my first step would be to look for deaths in 1974 and later where the surname is MORGAN and the mother's maiden name, - added to the index in 1974, - of DRYSDALE !

Joyce

To get the marriage register entries, - in the form of digitised images - for James Cowan MORGAN and his son of the same name, - you need to go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and spend a few bawbees.

To get forward to possible living relatives, you will need to pay a visit to New Register House in Edinburgh, or get someone to do this on your behalf.

Finding other descedants of Andrew Bennet MORGAN and Jane MARSHALL will all depend on what can be found in the 1841/51/61 censuses.

Unfortunately IGI appears to have no records for births to these parents. Surprisingly, MORGAN is not an uncommon surname, but even so, another technque would be to browse through post-1854 death records in Edinburgh and Leith for that surname, - but it's not really economic to do that on line, - again a visit to NRH is the preferred route.

My broadband link dropped out before I could complete my last post....... I saw the marriage, and the date means than there will be near certain census entries of interest for '41, '51, and maybe '61, - depends how many kids there were and how many had left home by 1861.

I don't suppose anyone is still following this thread more than five years on, but I have only just found it.

In David's post, the reported marriage of Kate Andrina Morgan to William G Mackidd in 1902 is actually a transcription error. (I have take this up with ScotlandsPeople.) The bridegroom was in fact William George Mackie, born in Sheerness, Kent in 1876. They married on 15 July 1902 at the Catholic Apostolic Church (now the Mansfield Traquair Centre) Edinburgh. They had one daughter, Winifred Mary Mackie, born 24th May 1903 in Leith South. The best fit I have found for Winifred in the marriages register is to James Learmonth Lyle in 1949. By then Winifred would have been 45 or 46, so the probability that they had children must be rather slim, although I have not made an exhaustive attempt to trace forward. If you are on genesreunited, please feel free to contact me. Make a tree seach for William, Kate or Winifred and you should find me.

You might also like to have a look at my blog http://mackiegenealogy.blogspot.com/. Click on the label on the right hand side for "Mackie family" and this should take you to a family group portrait including William, Kate and Winifred.

Phil Mackie
