Hi Guys,
I was wondering if someone could cast their eyes over this and tell me if you think I’m on the right track.
MY GGGrandfather was George Jack born abt 1832 suspect Falkirk area and died 14th May 1896 Bellshill. On his death cert it gives his father as James Jack (Deceased) and mother as Janet Neilson previously Jack ms Corbet (Deceased). So his mother has re-married.
I’ve been trying to find both parents death cert’s but with no luck. George had a sister Janet who died 7th March 1867 and parents are James Jack Deceased and Janet Corbet Deaseased, no mention of the Neilson bit.
Another sister Helen married an Adam Thomson on 18th April 1859 and parents show as James Jack and Janet Jack maiden name Corbet.
I can’t find a marriage cert for Janet marrying a Neilson but I have found a death cert for a Janet Neilson who is “married” to a John Neilson from 26th August 1864. On this cert Janet’s father is George Corbet and mother is I think Mary Black.
Does anyone think I’m on the right track with this last certificate or any more ideas on how to confirm it.
Many Thanks
Stuart

What age was the sister, Janet, when she died in 1867 and what age was Helen when she married in 1859?
Also who reported the death and who witnessed the marriage.
There are a few possiblities on this one:
1. The father died and the mother remarried
2. The mother died and the father married another Janet Neilson or Corbet
3. Both parents died when the children were very young and they couldn't remember the mother's name.
In IGI there IS a Stirlingshire family with James Jack and Janet FORBES as the parents, the children include:
1. JOHN JACK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 12 MAY 1830 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
2. PETER JACK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 04 JUN 1834 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
3. GEORGE JACK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 24 MAY 1832 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
4. HELEN JACK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 31 MAY 1836 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
5. JANET JACK - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 09 SEP 1828 Falkirk, Stirling, Scotland
So, if Helen was 23 when she married and Janet was about 39 when she died then there may have been a wee mix up in names.
You may have to track down other members of the above family even if t's just to eliminate them as a possibility.
Was Janet, the sister, married when she died?
I did notice the marriage between James Jack and Janet Corbet in 1828 but none for a James Jack and Janet Forbes.
Since the three middle letters in Forbes and Corbet are the same it's not beyond the realms of possibility that the person transcribing the details has misread the whole batch! Though I, personally, can't remember seeing any "F" that could get confused with "C".
Just a few wee ideas to mull over.

Janet was 35 when she died in 1867 giving an est DOB of 1832 . Janet’s husband William Hendry reported the death. Helen was 20 when she married in 1859 and it looks like friends are the witnesses as the names are not connected in any way.
Andy, you lost me with the mix up in the names, could I send you the certs I have and you can look at the writing, it does seem quite clear as Corbet but I no expert.

The certificate for the Janet Neilson gives the parents as George Corbet and Mary Black, Janet is down as 57 years giving a rough DOB as 1807/08
Another snippet I forgot to add last time, On an 1871 census for my GGgrandfather George Jack as well as his own family with him there is his uncle James Corbet aged 48, rough DOB 1823 Stirlingshire.
I think I need to find his death cert to find the parents to see if George Corbet and Mary Black are his parents which will then lead to the family you found.

Hello Stuart:
I have Jacks in Renfrew; don't know if there is any connection. John Jack (parents William Jack and Isabella Harvey) married Elizabeth Hay McMurray (my great grandfather's sister) in Renfrew in 1866. They had nine children all born in Renfrew.
