Selkirk, hawick, Bathgate,.....

I am looking researching my father side for the family. names are
Munro, Barret, Bathgate, Wright. from Selkirk, hawick and surounding
area. Also my husband side, names are burnside and young. We think
they come from Bathgate, and livingstone station area.
Any help please. as no one can help in my husband side.

In order to make any reasonable suggestions or search attempts you need to give just a few more details in addition to just surnames. Complete names of your father or husband....dates of birth or dates of marriage...places of birth....anything that you have proof of. There are a lot of possibilities but we just need a little more data to make a start!

Hello Jean
On the I.G.I i find Helen Barret She was born 28 april 1863 Selkirk
Her mothers name Mary mcGuire Father name Michel Barret She married John Munro. I would like to know when they got married. Son john married Georgina Wright (born 1895). I think her mothers Surname was Bathgate do not know her first name
My husband side we do not know anythink about. His mother was born 1931 in Whitburn her mother maiden name was Burnside.

Hi Xenia,

Using the free part of the marriage search on ScotlandsPeople, there is one obvious candidate (the only result returned). Search for John Munro and Helen Barret. Only one result and the place and year should be of no surprise to you, given the information you have given above.

Pay your credits and you can find the full detail of the certificate.

Andrew is right...you should have no problem finding the marriage on the ScotlandsPeople website. It will cost a few credits but it is really a great way to obtain copies of the actual records online through your own printer.

I looked on the IGI for any other children born to Michael and Mary and there are 3....

1. BRIDGET BARRET - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 02 SEP 1856 Stow, Midlothian, Scotland

2. HELEN BARRET - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 28 APR 1863 Selkirk, Selkirk, Scotland

3. ROBERT BARRET - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 15 MAR 1860 Selkirk, Selkirk, Scotland

Seeing this info tells you that Michael and Mary were in Midlothian in 1856 and may even have been married in that area.....so I searched for their marriage on the IGI and here is an extracted record of that.......

Marriage: 20 MAY 1851 Stow, Midlothian, Scotland

When the 1851 census index becomes available I bet you can find Michael and Mary on it living in or near Stow. The census was taken 30-31 March that year which would have been 6-7 weeks prior to their wedding. Because they were married prior to 1855 and Statutory Registration their Marriage would be recorded in the OPR and might not name the parents. Having Michael's father named in this IGI record is a bonus!

It would also be very worthwhile to have a look at the newly released 1861 Census Index on ScotlandsPeople. Knowing Robert Barrett was born in 1860 in Selkirk then the obvious place to start looking is there. You may find Michael and Mary with more children than are listed from the IGI above.

Now jumping ahead....here is Helen living at home in 1881 which would have been prior to her marriage to John Munro. You can see that her mother is a widow and was born in Ireland.

Also knowing that Michael Barrett was dead by 1881 this gives you a good solid window to search for his death in.....at the moment last known child born 1863....so between 1863 and 1881 probably in Selkirk.

I'm sure there is lots you'll be able to uncover for yourself....but please do come back and ask if you need some further hints or helps.
